There aren't really any quicker methods other than getting better at it from practice. There is a reason some of those couture dresses take a year or more to make because they are entirety hand-sewn. The more you hand-sew in life, the faster you get from practice.

You can use the beeswax to make your thread smoother (as another Redditor suggested) and I highly recommend it. There are also thread conditioners called Thread Heaven or Thread Magic. I prefer this instead of wax. Wax can get flakey, depends on the quality of the wax you are using.

Use a thimble and get used to using it to speed things up (it goes on the middle finger of your sewing hand). Use a short needle so you can enter and re-enter the fabric faster. However if you switch to running stitch, you won't want to use a short needle.

So I guess use the appropriate length needle for the stitch you are using. And using HIGH quality needles. It makes a huge difference. Someone who taught me couture hand-sewing gave me these needles and they are my treasures. They are Clover black gold and slide through silk or other fabrics much smoother. Definitely worth the extra money, just take care not to lose them or drop them on the floor!

Beeswax all the way. I bought a tiny container of Thread Heaven and it turned out I was allergic to it! I spent the next couple of hours wheezing, coughing, forget it!

I have since read that some people have had even worse reactions. A review from a customer with COPD was posted to amazon.com and has since been deleted - they've deleted all the negative reviews, but I found it here. Scroll down to "jayelithe".

Also, it gets old and crumbly.

this I have always wanted to take the 6 months needed to hike the Appalacian Trail from start to finish. I like being in the woods, where its quiet better than laying on a beach all day.
