For fat guys (hopefully not in little coats): take the advice below to find extra-long ties. In addition, you will find that ties don't like to stay front-and-center for you. Tie clips are jewelry and therefore an affectation -- you really need to have everything else perfect before you can carry that shit off -- and you probably aren't there yet. So go with tie aligns instead. They work great and you will look more put together. I bet crafty folks could make their own for next-to-nothing, but be sure not to leave any edges that will pull on threads.
