Like you said, it doesn't look like the greatest watch and is way overpriced for what it is. I suspect you might get a similar quality watch or even better by getting parts yourself.

If anyone is interested in doing this, I took the liberty of finding a few watches with faces that look somewhat like Joel's, especially the first which is probably perfect.

Lastly, just buy the green NATO strap separate and you should be good. This one is cheap and comes with a tool.

Band

None are exact, but considering most don't like the cartoonish look of the official one, I think there's some personal choice. Hope this helps everyone!

I have very small wrists (maybe even a bit smaller than 2.5 inches wide) so I'm going to give some advice here based solely on my own searching for smaller-sized watches in a market dominated by watches 40mm and up.

I think your advice of 35mm w/ 18mm strap is a good start, but certainly is not set in stone. Unless you get into a vintage watch, I doubt you will find any men's watch that is less than 34mm (I'm thinking of this Skagen that I own.) So making your cutoff 35mm is going to severely limit your choices. Going up by a few mm is not going to really be all that perceptible. I wear this watch that is 36mm and looks just fine. By the way, the size on Amazon says 41.29mm because they are quoting the size with the crown, but when people talk about watch size they are normally referring to the size without the crown. Amazon is maddeningly inconsistent and often flat-out wrong in the measurements that they list for their watches.

Another thing to realize is that there are other factors besides physical size that determine how a watch will look on your wrist. A watch with a large bezel and smaller dial will appear smaller than a watch with the opposite. White dials appear larger than dark dials. If you wore the Skagen I mentioned before and then switched to this Timex, they would probably appear to be around the same size despite a few mm difference in physical size.

As for strap size - aside from vintage watches, I know of only 2 mens watches that are have straps thinner than 18mm: this Timex, and the watches that Brooks Brothers sells at their outlet stores. So while you won't really find anything below 18mm, it's pretty trivial to go up to 20mm, maybe even 22mm. When you get to 24mm I think you will start to notice that the band looks a little thick for your wrist. But at that point, you'd probably have a watch that is over 40mm anyway.
