This is the one I have. I've had it for about a year. Still working great. Being able to see your calories burned is definitely motivating and fun.

I think the unfortunate reality is that the act of lifting heavy things requires a large increase in blood pressure (which is why lifting weights can lead to stroke / heart attack by dislodging pre-existing blood clots). It seems like your heart defects prevent your heart from creating and supporting that increase in blood pressure which leads to you feeling faint as blood is deprived from brain.

To maintain awareness of your heart rate during exercise, I think you should look into getting a heart rate monitor:

  • In watch form

  • Or one that you can wear around your chest

    Do some more research to find the best monitor for you depending on cost, comfort, accuracy, and durability.

    Regarding weight lifting:

  • Large compound exercises (e.g. squat, deadlift) put a much greater strain on your heart and vascular system by requiring entire muscle groups to work instead of isolated muscles.

  • Consider a program that focuses on muscle isolation - smaller movements with free weights or machines that target specific muscles. Its not ideal, but it will reduce the load on your heart and blood pressure demands. I would speak to your doctor and a physical therapist about this.

    Regarding cardio-vascular training:

  • As long as you train with that heart monitor and keep your heart rate under that 150 bpm ceiling, you should be able to perform almost any form of cardio exercise you wish.

  • Endurance athletes often train by heart rate intensity alone and often in the heart rate zone that you're forced to stay in.

  • Be VERY careful about interval training. Learn to train by heart rate rather than intensity/speed/distance. That Heart Rate Monitor will be your best friend.

  • Finally, START SLOW AND EASY. This advice is given to anyone starting endurance cardio - your body needs time to adapt to long periods of activity, always err on the side of caution.

I know the chest strap seems a bit inconvenient and possibly uncomfortable, but once you get in the habit of wearing it it's really no trouble to put on or wear for extended periods of time. I honestly forget I'm wearing mine a lot of the time. Sometimes I'll put it on to go work out, get distracted by something, end up putzing around for an hour and a half, then in a quiet moment hear it ticking away and realize I have it on.

There's another one by Timex which I've seen on display which has an elastic style strap all the way around and the monitor snaps on to the front. Mine is half elastic, half semi-flexible plastic band. Mine is less bulky but I'd bet the full elastic one is more comfortable.

What fucked up high school health teacher told you that? A person would have to be concentration camp skinny to burn muscle while running. The body will always choose to burn fat during exercise. The only way to burn muscle is to have near 0% body fat.

Not to mention that when you compare a skinny dude who never exercises vs. a fat dude who never exercises the fat guy has more muscle! He has to have more to carry around all the fat.

The reason fat people can't exercise for extended periods is because their heart rate goes to 100% doing far less work. No, a fat guy can't run 3 miles. Strap 200lbs of weight to the skinny guy and he can't either.

You are fat and want to exercise? Don't try to emulate already fit people. Get a heart rate monitor and go do whatever the hell you want to keep your heart rate at 70% for 30 minutes. Walk up and down stairs, or do jumping jacks. It doesn't matter how slow you do them, just maintain that damn heartrate!

Stop crying into your Cheetos on Reddit and go make something of yourself damn it!

I would say, get a heart rate monitor - this is the one I have - and go for a walk for 15 to 30 minutes at a time, keeping his heart rate in the suggested range for his age and desired workout intensity (might be wise to ask your doctor what a good range would be, considering).
