You can always give them some toys (rings, books, etc) to see if they can entertain themselves without needing you. My mom warned me not to be the only source of entertainment for our boys or else we would regret it later. So I had some light up music toys or put them in one of these for about 5-10mins at a time. This seemed to work out great. Also singing to them (silly made up songs) entertained them with just me.
Things we use every day are the Rock N Play sleeper, Miracle Blanket, and this gym. He will lay on it and bat at the hanging animals forever.
Honestly, none of the "gear" was life-altering. Diapers, wipes, and full boobs, and my daughter is good to go.
If I had to pick 1 fun item that has been most useful it would probably be her play mat. Early on she hated it but since 6 weeks or so it has been great. She loves it, it keeps her occupied, and I don't feel bad about leaving her there while I get stuff done because I can see her building motor skills and learning while she plays.
