I strongly recommend a book titled Tongue Fu!: How to Deflect, Disarm, and Defuse Any Verbal Conflict. I need to reread it, but it's got great ideas and philosophies for being proactive which dealing with difficult situations. It helps you to actively respond rather than react when you think (or actually) you're being verbally attacked/accused.
