The bad thing is I used to take melatonin for sleeping, and did a whole ritual before bed. I still do, I just don't take the melatonin. It usually works. I take all my nighttime medication, then I get in the shower. I run it nice and hot because your body temperature naturally drops a few degrees when you fall asleep, so having a hot shower before bed simulates this and helps you fall asleep faster. I towl of, put on lotion, that helps me relax because I have a specific lotion I put on at night so my brain goes "okay its sleep time", and the masaging helps some as well. Legs, arms, neck, chest, all that. Then I put my PJ's on. And I get in bed, get comfy and I will ometimes do the breathing thing. I have been to many therapists who have taught me how to do that. But the two things I find that work best for me is One: (what I usually do), I just make up little stories in my head. Ones that relax me personaly, they rae usually variations of the same story. I'm always the same "character". But they will involve me(my character) having to get rest for some reason... such as I have a big concert tomorrow and my girlfriend (another character who is USUALLY the same person) is lying in bed with me reassuring me and cuddling me. I sleep with a stuffed bunny and I have an extra pillow that he gets cuddled with, so I generally envision that the pillow and things are her. I know it sounds pathetic, but it relaxes me and I'e been doing it for at leas 20 years.
TWO: (this one is just occasionally if there is an extreme situation), I may have mentioned I'm bipolar. Well, sometimes I have auditory hallucinations. So I will put my noise cancelling headphones on (I will usually have been listening to music for a while before bed), then I will put on an album or play list that is soothing to e. I cant listen to just instrumental because I have to be able to focus on the words. With instrumentals the auditory hallucinations become stronger and turn some what visible as well. I think it's because when I was young my mom would put on thing like Mozart when we went to bed and would tell us to imagine images to the music. Anyway, the images get dark and scary. So yes. I will put on albums that I know by heart so I can focus on the lyric but I m not trying to learn the lyrics, and I start to get sleepy. I will slowly start turi down the volume on my ipod and after about half an hour or so I will get so tired that I know I will fall right asleep. So I turn off the music, take off the headphones and fall asleep. Sometimes I straight up fall asleep with them on and end up listening to the whole play list or albumm. But I have big over the ear headphones and thy hurt whe I use them in bed. Because I have to lie on my side. One day I want to get these headphones just for sleeping. I have had anoter set that are similar on my list for a LONG LONG time. But they were more expensive, but they were the only ones I could find. Now maybe I'll be able to get them sooner! :]

Anyway. I took a long time to explain my rituals for sleep. Right now I think what is going on is my Insomnia and my Chronic Fatigue Syndrome are hitting me at the same time. It makes for a REALLY odd combination. I'm totally exhausted. I can't do anything. It's taking me forever to type up thing because my eyes keep crossing and I keep hitting the wrong keys for whatever reason. My eyes don't want to stay ope, and I can close them and try to sleep but I just lie there awake with my eyes closed.

I hope it stops soon. It's completely insane.

I second this, these are amazing. In addition, sleep headphones, and listen to white noise or rain soundtracks or something of the like and set an alarm on your computer.
