Just remember if you do actually go Comcast, to do yourself a favor and buy your own hardware. Get yourself a good DOCSIS 3.0 modem (or 3.1 if you want to spring for gigabit) and a router that won't bottleneck you.

I've had Comcast for multiple years in multiple apartments, both in college with 2 roommates and post grad with my gf. Outside of the outage from like 2-4am once every 4ish months give or take, I've always received the service I paid for. I won't try and say they're a company ran by good people (they're not), but the service is reliable if you get the right hardware for the job. The combo I linked ya would break even in under a year's worth of rental fees.

Just saying, but most likely your modem, and thus your router, got a spike when the lightning hit because it came in through the cable lines, thus dodging your surge protector.

To fix this, I'd get a router that doesn't cost $20, though that's a good modem. Something like this might be more to your needs. If your router is borked, you will need to replace it. Try updating firmware and whatnot, maybe try DD-WRT firmware to see if that makes a difference.

Run Speedtest.net and check the results vs what you should have.

and.. FIOS..? You may want to check if your router is ALSO a wifi transmitter. I looked up FIOS routers, and all the current ones on verizon.com include wifi. But that might just be the ones for sale.

If the verizon router looks like this, it's a decent modem but a garbage router. If it's one of the newer ones, it's actually pretty solid, and your wifi problems aren't coming from the router. I've had both of these, the newer one is good enough that I didn't bother hooking up my nice router when I moved in..

Buy something like this. Set it up. Turn the wifi off on the TWC/Verizon FiOS router. Enjoy having decent wifi.

I was always told they last longer if you get the modem and router separately.

Gigabit is 1Gb.

Ditch that shit. Buy a DOCSIS 3.0 modem that is compatible with your ISP and get your own router. What ISP are you using? Just because you're on a contract, does not mean you need to use their hardware. You can also just get your own separate router ($30 to $200), call your ISP and tell them "I want my modem to be put into bridge mode" and that will make the modem do only modem things while you can handle all the ports stuff and other configurables on your own.

A ton of people blame Comcast for their "Wifi" issues and just have really shitty wireless routers. My gf had an old Cisco router that with all her roommates on it they would get 4-8mbps max. I gave them a ubiquity ac pro and magically they all get their cir 100mbps and have never had a problem since. Not saying that's your issue, but it's something to look into. That appears to be a 2.4GHz only router (with a rather weak processor compared to what's in currently available routers), and depending on which version of that router you have, seems it was released around 7 years ago. I'd simply replace the router with something far newer. If you're otherwise happy with TP-Link hardware, the AC1200 or C7 would likely suit your environment / uses. Once you do that, if you still have weak spots, then add a wireless access point (not a router in "AP Mode", not an extender, and definitely not a repeater) to fill in any gaps. :)

You got all the cheap solutions already but if you want an better but slightly pricier option, you can do what I did, note: You need one of Guelph routers in your room or a neighboring room because you need an Ethernet connection.

Buy a Cat5 or Cat6 network cable, a cheep router (the one I got was https://www.amazon.ca/TP-Link-AC1200-Smart-WiFi-Router/dp/B01IUDUJE0) set up your own network and tada you have your own personal internet bubble, you can use this router for a lot more then playing on your switch.

If you are interested in computers I would recommend this option as you can do a lot of things with your own router. The most common is creating your own proxy so you can tunnel to your router from anywhere, which if set up right can let you remotely access any connected device on your network with the right authentication. If you dont really care about Computer stuff and just want to play smash go with a cheaper option

You can certainly call your internet provider to get them to replace your modem and router if it is theirs you are using since you are renting it.

If you're using your ISP one then you are renting it which is adding to your monthly cost. For example if you have comcast, your modem that would work would be this:

I mean, maybe, but the router is working except for the fact that the radios won't come up. I guess it's possible the power supply is freaking out and changing it may help but I don't see where coax factors into that.
It's always a good idea to have your networking stuff on a UPS anyway as it tends to be sensitive to line voltage changes. There are also dedicated (cheap) smaller UPS devices meant just for basic home networking equipment.

Having said that, most consumer crap routers live their lives plugged directly into the wall or a power strip so it's not absolutely necessary.

Is it even worth it? I only have 15/2 speeds, but honestly they rarely get above 6-7mbps and I'm wondering if it's my router (my PC is 10' away from the router). When I built my new Ryzen rig I got a 20' cat5 and would only pull 2-3mbps from the routern until I gave up and put my wireless adapter back in.

I quite like TP-Link. I have a couple of models lower then this model and have had no problems. It has 3 antennas and the new wifi technology called AC. It's a pretty good deal for what you're getting, I think.

Okay that's perfectly fine to do. So option 2 if I understand correctly? This will provide the slightly better temperatures compared to 3/4 and also makes sure that the dust build up will be easy to clean.

In terms of positive & negative air pressure. It's not as simple as simply checking the CFM of the fans and then call it a day. Those CFMs are really not the best thing to look at either, it's an okay statistic, but.. it doesn't tell you the whole story. Fan speeds also matter, the fan speed is controlled by your motherboard based on temperatures from the CPU & GPU & other temperature sensors that it got.
So the fans will spin at different speeds based on how hot something is, compared to an other.. So it can be that your exhaust fans would spin faster than the intake, which would create a negative air pressure that way.. simply because your CPU isn't getting hot and other parts are.. I mean, you're probably overthinking this a bit tooo much, if I am very honest.

If you're really worried about getting negative air pressure, then simply only use 1 exhaust fan. Buy the fan filters I linked earlier as well and put that one the top and tada! You should really not get a lot of dust inside the PC now. And pretty much always have a positive air pressure.

Yep, you can simply plug in a router to the modem/router combo unit. You have to wire it up, so you go from your current modem one of the 4 RJ45 ports (ETH1/2/3/4) to the new router it's "Internet" port, it's a different color and often 1 port. That provides that router with Internet.

So you can either buy:

• TP-Link Archer C1200 and connect that to your current modem with an ethernet RJ45 patch cable.
  
• NETGEAR Nighthawk AC1900 and connect it with the COAX cable that's currently connected to your modem/router combo unit.
  
  There are no compatibility issues by simply connecting a "router only" to the modem/router combo unit. It even says so in the manual that this is an option. The "off the shelf" router is at the bottom of this picture here.
  You will simply have 2 routers in your home actually providing WiFi/internet, so you should connect the devices to the "new/better" router.
  You can still let your friends that you don't like as much, connect to your "slow" router, for shit and giggles.. if you're an evil santa that is.
