Note that regular sd cards will protrude, which could cause damage if you travel with it, but there are ones made with custom fit to be flush with the edge.

It's impossible to upgrade the drive, but that's not to say you can't add space. Extra 128 GB for 13" and 15"

I have a 2015 Macbook Pro 13" with 128GB SSD, 8GB RAM and a Transcend JetDrive Lite 330 (128 GB) installed:

https://www.amazon.com/Transcend-JetDrive-Storage-Expansion-TS128GJDL330/dp/B00MTHLURE

I use the Transcend JetDrive Lite to store my large mp3 collection, pictures, etc. and I really like it. It sits almost flush in the SD-CARD slot and out of the way.

My 2015 Macbook Pro is set up with 2 partitions (Sierra & Windows 10) and I use the Jetdrive to store most of my documents, music, pictures, etc. on it. The Transcend JetDrive Lite 330 is factory formatted as exFAT so both MacOS and Windows can access it.

If you have a 15" display:

This is another storage alternative if you do not use your SD-Card slot...

I use something similar to this:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00MTHLURE/ref=pd_aw_sims_1?pi=SS115&simLd=1
With my MacBook Air and would highly recommend it. No real drawbacks and you can just leave it plugged in as long as 128gb is enough.

u/Mykem · 2 pointsr/apple

The best option until OWC or any 3rd party replacement PCIe SSD is available is something like the Transcend Jetdrive:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00MTHLURE/ref=pd_aw_sims_7?pi=SS115&simLd=1

Unfortunately, it's nowhere as fast as SSD.

Quite a bit overpriced. Just go to Amazon and pay about half unless you really think aluminum is worth the premium...

I have been using one of these in my MBPr 13" and 15" for a couple years and they are great!

Sits near flush with your MacBook. So you never need to take it out.

I have a late 2013 13" MBP w/ Retina

  • 2.4 i5 (upto 2.9 with turbo boost)

  • 8gb sdram

  • 256gb flash storage

I also added a Transcend JetDrive Lite 128GB storage expansion which is $97.99 on Amazon.

Minor cosmetic imperfections - I can take photos if you're interested. Used throughout my undergrad studies for homework and standard goofing off.

I would recommend an SD card that's sits flush with the MacBook Pro, you can get up to 128gb. Make sure you pick the MacBook you have. Link below. I have one of these. Not the fastest drive to write to but has good read speeds. I just store pictures, music and films on it. Things that's just stay on my Mac at all times

Go for the 512GB version + you can extend the Storage with this memory card: http://www.amazon.de/dp/B00MTHLURE
It does not stick out of the case.
I use ist to store my iTunes library on it. When on the go I use Spotify or iTunes Match, so no need to carry around my lossless files.

It's a little more than you might spend for it on eBay or Craigslist, but newegg.com is a reputable site, and you won't have the hassle of dealing with scammers or anything along those lines.

As for wether or not it would be a good upgrade, across the board the answer is yes, with the exception of storage capacity. That said, the SSD will be a much faster internal storage, and if you need more storage, you can always add something like this to your SD card slot.

It will be more than capable of editing HD videos, and should even handle smaller 4k videos just fine. If your budget is under $1,000, this wouldn't be a bad machine to buy.

That said, have you considered looking into selling your current machine and maybe going for something a little newer?

Get one of these flush mount SD cards and add 128GB of storage. It's not super fast but it's good enough for the music and other media type stuff. Only about $74.

No one here seems to have actually read your post.

Replacing the SSD in a 2012 rMBP isn't an easy swap, and most importantly, NOT COMPATIBLE with a standard laptop SSD or HDD drive, but there are some products out there to upgrade it: http://www.amazon.com/Transcend-JetDrive-Upgrade-Macbook-display/dp/B00JKCHMP0

Also, as another poster pointed out, the JetDrive Lite is really good for offloading less intensive stuff such as media and freeing up more space on the SSD: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00MTHLURE

Edit: Also, I wouldn't trust that store. Not only is that price incredibly low for even a standard 1TB laptop drive, but it's nowhere near the price for the appropriate SSD replacement you'd need for a rMBP, which to me says they don't know what they're talking about.

These are pretty sweet.

If you are worried about space, most of my stuff is in the "cloud" these days between dropbox, and iTunes match. I just don't keep a ton of media on my machine. That I do keep is on one of these.

Some manufacturers make SDXC cards that are flush with the side of the laptop. There are plenty more models than just that one, so shop around. This is a good solution if you don't otherwise use your SD reader.

u/Stingray88 · 1 pointr/applehelp

There are other storage options instead of external drives too. Like putting one these in the SD Card slot. They're specifically designed to sit flush inside.

Sorry to say but there aren't any kits out there to upgrade the 2015 model. Look here for more details
> Newer-generation 13″ and 15″ Retina MacBook Pros use newer SSDs with faster PCIe connectors. As of early 2015, no third-party SSDs are compatible with this standard, but we’re expecting to see options hit the market closer to the middle of the year. Some Retina MacBook Pro SSDs will apparently be capable of achieving speeds in the 1.2GB/second range, compared with the 700-800MB/second speeds of stock drives.

Edit: My bad I didn't see that that post was so old that i linked. Here is a nice one.

You could upgrade it by an SD card like I did. Jetdrive by transcend has a good price on theirs. They even have a 256 option now. I have no problems with it. I just put my big files on there like Photos library etc.

Transcend 128GB JetDrive Lite 330 Storage Expansion Card for 13-Inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display (TS128GJDL330)

PNY used to make similar (Storedge) and I have two for my old MacBook Air, it's a lot slimmer than even the small USB drives. Just check if it fits your model/year.

u/scm02 · 1 pointr/AppleWhatShouldIBuy

2015 13" MacBook Pro.

Plenty powerful for day to day, nice screen, decent battery life, 3-4 years of life in it even as a base model.

One thing to know - refurbished models from Apple are like new. Think you can get it for $1,100. Yep - http://www.apple.com/shop/product/FF839/refurbished-133-inch-macbook-pro-27ghz-dual-core-intel-i5-with-retina-display

One thing to note - they only have 128 GB of storage. But there are several add ons out there that sit in the SD card slot and add storage to your computer. https://www.amazon.com/Transcend-JetDrive-Storage-Expansion-TS128GJDL330/dp/B00MTHLURE/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1484262147&sr=8-2&keywords=Transcend+jetdrive+lite

You really can't go wrong with any of them - but this model is a good "starter" Mac that gets a lot of people to join the dark, I mean, good side. Even if you got that model used from eBay or even Gazelle or Swappa I'd still recommend this model.
