Tl;DR

His main email account on Mail.com didn't have two factor authentication enabled. An attacker compromised that account through a "forgot my password" bug. Once they had access to his main account, they had a backdoor access into all of his other accounts.

Moral of the story: Treat your main email account with the most security possible. Always have two factor enabled. Make sure you aren't using a second-rate email provider (looking at you mail.com) or better yet run your own mailserver. And make sure that your main email password is completely different from all other passwords you use and is a secure length/composition.

Also if your phone has access to your email account without a password needed, make sure your phone has full device encryption enabled and is pin protected. If your PC has your email password saved, make sure you aren't running logmein or teamviewer or any other remote access software that could give an attacker easy access. If you have to use one of those programs, you should have two factor setup. For the best security, keep your computer turned off when you aren't using it.

Edit: A computer connected to the internet should never be treated as secure storage. It is fine for a daily spending wallet, only holding an amount of money you are willing to lose but not for anything medium to long term.

The best option for long term storage is probably still encrypted offline paper wallets:

A really user friendly option that allows you to spend your coins much easier is a hardware wallet such as the trezor. This is a much better option for those without significant computer skills: http://www.amazon.com/TREZOR-The-Bitcoin-Safe-Black/dp/B00R6MKDDE

Glad you made it.

Please get a Trezor wallet (or two), you have too many coins to leave them on a windows machine.

And keep the Trezor recovery code in a safe place like (ironically) a bank deposit box, so you don't end up like the guy who had his safe stolen from his home.

> Is there a way to keep it on your end and not on someone else's server?

That's one of the biggest advantages of Bitcoin. To hold BTC, you literally just have to keep a secret big number. It can be printed on a piece of paper locked in a safe and buried in concrete, and unless somebody dug it back up your BTC would be completely safe.

More practically, you have hardware wallets that have a PIN and make it easy to send and receive coins. They're about the size of a keychain fob.

You can always head over to /r/bitcoin . Basically if you don't need to, don't sell it. A lot of people are very bullish on bitcoin right now and think the price should be around $600-$700. These are major financial institutions saying this too. There is also a big event that has a lot of people bullish happening in about 100 days that will start shrinking the supply of bitcoin. A lot of speculation that each coin will go up in price here too.

As for how to store it, I'd personally transfer it to your own hardware device and keep it away from companies like coinbase, and the like. Make sure you have the private keys, etc. Look into a trezor http://www.amazon.com/TREZOR-The-Bitcoin-Safe-Black/dp/B00R6MKDDE
Just get it off the thumb drive and into your wallet with your private keys until you know what to do.

As for selling it, this is a huge amount and most likely you will be on a plane to San Francisco to meet with a financial company that specializes in large bitcoin sales.

If you're going to go that route, pick up a Trezor or Nano Ledger S. A hardware wallet (cold storage) is the most secure.

Not sure about Bittrex. But the difference between Breadwallet and Coinbase is the ownership of the keys that control the Bitcoin. With Breadwallet you have control over the keys (direct ownership of the BTC). With Coinbase they hold the keys for you (they own the BTC not you) and you just have an IOU that you will get them if/when you ask for it.

From what I've read it's not very advisable to store you BTC with any exchange. The preferred method for control/safety if you're playing with large quantity is a hardware wallet like Trezor.

Situations like Mt. Gox explain why people don't use exchanges as wallet. Even Coinbase's CEO advises against it. At the end of the day it's better to just use a wallet, either hardware or software, and make sure you have control of your BTC if shit hits the fan.

I see multiple sellers, ...

The top 3 sellers that I saw had nothing that would give me concern.

These things are the Trezor One and are probably being bought wholesale (and/or drop-shipped). If numerous different sellers all have the same offer, it's pretty safe to assume there is no need to be particularly wary of these.

Of course, ... make sure you wipe and install the firmware you download from Trezor though. And don't put too much Bitcoin on it either way, ... can't rule anything out.

:) Wrong product... This was litterally just launched, may take a while to come up on international search. We do participate in Amazon's Global Export program, so shipping can go anywhere Amazon does. Here are the product links:

A few days ago, I bought a Trezor hardware wallet. It's pretty cool, and does give you a sense of security. It costs about $100 U.S. on Amazon.com. Another recommended wallet which I haven't used is Ledger Nano S. I went with the Trezor considering it was less expensive, and has been around for a longer time. Hardware wallets are probably recommended for people storing higher amounts of currency. I'm just getting started, but I bought one just to try to lay a good foundation and understanding of crypto currencies in general.

I ordered my Trezor from this seller on amazon-https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00R6MKDDE/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

All I want is piece of mind for my OMG coins and I just read how people can place a chip in these things or something that steals your coins!

u/gubatron · 1 pointr/Bitcoin

They have a link to their Amazon listing on their homepage

u/Dorskind · 1 pointr/TREZOR

If I had to guess, they ordered them wholesale during the boom and now they're stuck with excess inventory. If you check Amazon, there are dozens of merchants (many with fulfillment by Amazon) with brand new Trezors listed at a discount. Who are all of these people?

u/NikInAsia · 1 pointr/TREZOR

Are all of following resellers on Amazon.com legit too?:

Planet Fun Toys

Optimal Living

The ToyGiant

SQ Deals Store

Thanks

>I haven't seen these available recently, now they seem to be available all over Amazon and elsewhere. What I would like to know:
Is this some kind of old model that will replaced with something that is about to be released?
Is this able to support the new things that I am reading about like SegWit or Lightning or something else?
How would I move my Bitcoin from my Electrum to the new Trezor and not pay a high fee to move it all?

>*Thank you all for taking the time to help people like me, you really do help move bitcoin forward!

Interesting. I'm seeing Trezor Black, $72; Trezor White, $72.

Here's the link for the Black:

I recommend buying a Trezor. Its a small device to store your bitcoin securely with jumping through hoops.

Amazon offers you the official resellers randomly, if you wish to purchase Trezor from SatoshiLabs directly you need to select the seller directly in the listing.

These links should lead to Trezor products directly from SatoshiLabs:

Trezor Model T

Trezor One White

Trezor One Black

u/thittle · 1 pointr/TREZOR

It’s my first HW wallet. I bought it from here.

Trezor One Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00R6MKDDE?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

It seemed legitimate. Can anyone more knowledgeable provide their input? Are my coins on it at risk? I set up the seed myself.

u/ChildishForLife · 1 pointr/QuadrigaCX

Oh like buy on Quadriga and then withdraw it? I personally only use the Quadriga wallet so I am not sure which ones are a good choice. Hardware wallets are always a good option as they are secure and you have complete control over your keys. I don't have enough invested in quad right now to justify one, but maybe later.

Ledger nano

Trezor currently on sale.

Hope this helps!

u/Blais_Of_Glory · 1 pointr/BitcoinBeginners

If you're planning on investing, definitely get a hardware wallet. Yes, they cost money but it's worth it for the security. Trezor seems to be the best hardware wallet that I've found and it's currently $78 on Amazon (which is a pretty good deal). The other popular hardware wallets include the KeepKey (Amazon link) and Ledger Nano S (Amazon link). Check out /r/TREZOR to learn more about the Trezor wallet.
