Reddit reviews True Story: Murder, Memoir, Mea Culpa

Michael Finkel ran into a similar problem years ago. He was a New York Times reporter, and (IIRC) ended up using bad sources in covering a story on child labor in Africa. Reporters there routinely paid sources, and so the sources learned to tell whatever story the reporters were looking for.

He got caught, and right when the Times was going to publish the story, he got contacted about another story. ...Turns out a guy who murdered his(own) family had assumed his identity. Decent enough story if you want to check out the book.

True Story by Michael Finkel is a remarkable story with some similarities to SK's investigation into the Syed case, but much more disturbing and bizarre. Soon to be a major motion picture starring James Franco.
