I suggest you buy good quality winter gear over lots of winter gear.

my top favorites are my:

Insulated LL Bean Boots and Patagonia Fleeces and Jackets. Eddie Bauer is another decent brand I have a few pieces such as vests and flannels from there.

For staying warm at home / keeping the heating bill low I love:
wool slippers, Eddie Bauer throws for the couch, flannel sheets for the bed

for snow activities:
I have a Roxy brand snow pants and jacket set, Carhartt coveralls, and I ice boat so I have a pair of ice cleats for my snow boots

for hats, mittens, and gloves:
I went to a local llama farm and bought some llama wool knitted stuff - make sure they are insulated beyond just being knit

Those brands (LL Bean, Patagonia, Eddie Bauer) are well worth their price tag for longevity of the articles and their effectiveness (and with Black Friday coming up you can get excellent deals). For example, I have had my Bean boots just shy of 10 years before I finally pulled the trigger and bought some new ones. **also I suggest you look around local thrift stores for quality gently used products**

for your car:

a windshield cover, a decent ice scraper, and my personal favorite a snobrum. If you are unfamiliar with driving in snow an emergency car shovel like this would not be a bad idea either.
