I would be super surprised if something dug that far in, and came up in the exact right spot. You could dig out the fire pit, put in a tub, and refill it. They'd love it, and you'd be covering the sharp edges of the hardware cloth with the lip of the tub. Something like this is only $25 at my local farm store

I think your plan is good. I would extend the base of hardware cloth 1 foot out from the perimeter of the run. This would quickly dissuade someone from digging if they started right next to the run, then you wouldn't have a bunch of holes to refill. Like this. Something called "rabbit wire" might be good too. More rigid and easier to lay flat as a base in my experience.
