This book is one I read in college and Grad school. It's a good introduction to modern musical styles.
That's a lot of different subjects... what are some examples of music you like / want to understand better?
If that's hard to answer specifically, a general history of C20 classical music might be a good place to start (I remember finding this one useful, and still sometimes leaf through it).
If you're looking for a great read on specifically 20th century music that talks about the analytical side of the actual music, try this book by Robert P. Morgan.
