Speaking as someone who hikes and lives in the inaka (and the bears have been on the move this year - we got a warning at the morning meeting because one has been seen behind the parking lot at work in the mornings) I generally have a small bell attached to my pack or a belt loop so I make enough unusual noise that things know I'm coming and won't get surprised and you can always carry this if you're really worried.
