I used it as an excuse for a break and excused myself with family.

But when we were out I would use a cover that had a wire, it allowed me to see baby and let air in / keep the cover off his head (which seemed to bother him) because it made a little tent.

It works great and you can still see baby through the top part which is really nice. Also gives them a bit more airflow that way.

Try the udder cover. It is designed so that you can look at your baby and still be covered if you are shy about breastfeeding in public.
