But to really learn well I would suggest you either try and implement what you read by promoting your own website/blog. Thats the best way to learn. You'll see traffic coming into the website, your rankings improving, you'll learn how to 'ask' people to promote you.

To be honest I don't think you learn much about SEO or link building by reading books... getting your hands dirty is the only way because by the time its been printed in a book, chances are a competitor has already deployed it or the industry has already over-indulged in it and you're working from an outdated textbook so to speak.
