a good mouse is a huge advantage in bf3. I got the logitech G700 a few months ago, and it's seriously indispensable. You can change your sensitivity on the fly ... go lowest when you're sniping or doing long range shots, go highest when you're in jets and such.


Not to mention it looks awesome + it feels great in your hand.

Flicknm's comment really need more upvotes. For a graphic designer you can never go wrong with books about design whether its about becoming a designer, books about a specific designer, or simply reference books on stuff like logos/typography/print/websites. Books are probably the best gift you can give to any designer, pro or student.

However a tablet isn't a bad idea as someone already mentioned. If she's got strong artistic ability (drawing/painting at a professional level) an intuous4 would not be a bad choice and would be a valuable tool for years to come. However if she does not feel like venturing into stuff like digital painting or simply doesn't have profound drawing ability a bamboo is more than she'll ever need and also pretty cheap and extremely versatile.

As a student she'll eventually explore packaging design or have to create physical mock-ups so perhaps a set of quality tools like exacto knives with a couple different blades (next to the standard blade I use scoring blades a lot for thick material), large self-healing cutting mat, folding bone for perfect creases on paper (these days you see some with added features like a cutting blade), large metal straight edge ideal for cutting (with corked back), long reach stapler, spray mount, super glue, and my personal best friend: the lead holder (also referred to as a clutch pencil) with a sharpener for it. All of this along with a drafting table will always be useful.

If she doesn't own a wide format printer and you feel she might like the convenience of one I highly recommend an Epson Stylus R1400 printer. I often see these on sale with rebates which will lower the overall cost to $200ish however that's kinda based on luck. It prints great pictures as big as 13x19 inches (great for poster or magazine spread mock-ups). A very handy but rarely used feature it has that made me look like a fucking superstar in classes is its ability to print labels on printable CDs. However, as great as this feature is it takes a bit of experimentation to get the alignment right and to be able to print as close to the border of the CD as possible. This feature is also a huge ink-guzzler but prints beautifully (always use max settings or else colors will look faded). Printable CDs can come in both Matte and Glossy finishes (I'm particularly fond of Taiyo Yuden Watershield CDs).

If your girlfriend happens to enjoy PC games then a gaming mouse could potentially be a fantastic gift. I'd recommend something along the lines of Logitech's G700 gaming mouse. Reason I recommend a gaming mouse is because you can record keystrokes and assign those macros to any of the additional buttons making any work on common programs like Illustrator/Photoshop/In-Design a lot more streamlined. This particular mouse can record up to 5 different profiles at once so she can have her favorite keyboard shortcuts macro'd for pretty much all her favorite programs. This mouse also works as both wired and wireless (which I'd NEVER recommend for gaming lol) and uses a rechargable AA battery and has a little compartment in there for the wireless reciever. Basically this mouse is a godsend to me but even as just a mouse for design work I think its pretty awesome. I highly recommend Logitech products since they're very well made and have great customer service.

Someone already mentioned it but sketchbooks are always nice, as a student I noticed a lot of people weren't into the habit of planning designs on pencil and paper, if she's one of those people then she really needs to change that and have something like a moleskine sketchbook or some other form of sketch diary (get a nice hardcovered one). You can have all the best technology in the world but nothing will ever trump the mighty pencil (again I highly recommend a clutch pencil) since this is where all design HAS TO begin. If she already does that and happens to like drawing I'd look into an Earthbound sketchbook or other equivalent. Basically this is just a sketchbook that has recycled toned (brown) pages which makes it great for adding highlights on drawings with a white colored pencil or gel pen. The norm for designers is almost always plain & gridded Moleskine sketchbooks though. I've seen other sketch diaries that have a dot grid on them which I'd love on a moleskine but I don't think they have anything outside a normal grid sketchbook.

There's also other gimmicky crap out there for graphic designers however I'm just listing stuff that are actually useful and can be appreciated. You can probably just cruise around r/design and r/graphic_design to see those things since that's all I ever tend to see from those subreddits these days.

I use the Logitech G700 and bind all four of my abilities to the side buttons. The mouse provides for three different profiles, so if you like different sensitivity levels for different games/tasks, that's an option. Can be used wired or wirelessly. And, it's also on sale right now for ~45% off =P

Are you really getting downvoted for this? You're right. Running an HDMI to your room, which for some is nowhere nearby, and would need to be like 100 feet long is an inconvenience alone ($80). On top of that, you need to buy a wireless keyboard and mouse, both of which are expensive and have limited range that may not even reach if your room or a place to play is far away ($70, and $80 for gaming ones). THEN, you are expected to have a monitor in your room, and if you don't, then you need to buy one, and a decent one suddenly makes this not so convenient or cheap (For one of equal size that has HDMI input, $190). That is about $420 (/r/im14andthisisfunny), which is more expensive, and even if you find cheaper parts (I just looked for well reviewed, popular ones, which are usually a good value), setting it up is a heck of a lot more effort. If you want to move the set up, good luck. While with the Shield, you can just pick it up and go. Also, like you said, it runs Android too, which has emulators for games, and tons of other apps not available for PC.

Wireless lag is overblown. If the mouse uses an USB RF receiver and you're within 15 feet of it you'll be fine.

However, I wouldn't use a wireless mouse if you play in LAN's a lot because there's probably a bunch of other interference going on. Another thing to consider is making sure you keep the batteries charged up.

If I were in the market for a new mouse, I would get the Logitech G700. It was the best of both worlds, wireless and wired usb charging

I'll chime in with my love not of a mouse, but the Logitech G13 gamepad. A year ago I researched and asked around at length about this device vs. the Naga or G600. I went with the gamepad and I wish I bought one sooner. So much customization. You get the same functionality as these "keypad" mice, but with more keys and you're not stuck just using your 1 thumb to access all those buttons. With the G13 you have all your digits lined up in place for your next move. No "player lag" because you didn't move your thumb quick enough. I even found the thumbstick to be very natural for strafing when used with mouse turning, very tight focused movements while leaving your fingers free. I didn't expect to rely on it at all before hand.

I have the G13 paired up with an G700, it's 4 thumb buttons are perfect for modifiers while it's additional left click buttons are nice for quick target selecting, setting focus, fight specific macro stuff etc...

The G13 has a big learning curve, most owners say a couple weeks until you get comfortable with it, for me it was more like a month and it required a lot of reteaching my brain and learning how to use my off hand on a keypad more efficiently. It was totally worth it.

*With the 22 basic keys, addition buttons, auto macro switching, etc... I never touch my keyboard at all anymore unless I'm typing. I can do everything from opening bags, emotes, mounting, every spell and action in my book all from this thing. I love it.

I have this mouse at work, and it's great for that, really comfortable. But no way would I use it for gaming. There are a lot cheaper mice that does a better job at that. For PS2 I specifically bought the Logitech G700. It doesn't look flashy but it's the best damn gaming mouse I have ever had. I used to use a Razr Imperator, but got the G700 because of the extra thumb buttons which arereally uselful for aircraft maneuvering and comms in PS2.

G700 $70 on amazon. I don't really need a mouse right now but this is really tempting. I didn't know it could be wired.

I've heard good things about the Logitech G600 but don't personally use it myself. I use the G700 in conjunction with a G13.

This I can help with my friend. I currently have the Logitech G700 wireless gaming mouse. I freaking LOVE it. It has 7 programmable macro buttons. But, it has three profiles. With each profile you can have the buttons programmed however you want. It has a visual DPI indicator which can be changed on the fly.

I currently us this as my keyboard because it was really cheap and was free with my desktop. I thought that I might have problems with it being a cheap piece of shit but I love it. It's simple, and it has really good key pressure for gaming. Also, on the top is good visual indicators if you have any locks on blah, blah, blah. I think my favorite part is the buttons along the top. I don't turn my computer off I put it to sleep when I'm not using it. The buttons on the top of the keyboard include: Sleep, Power, wake up, and Fn.

So ya, there ya go. I've only been PC gaming for about 8 months so this might be completely wrong but that's what I have. Happy gaming!

I've had the g700 from logitech for the past few years. It has a dpi indicator, as well as a battery indicator. It's by far the best mouse i've used personally. They currently have the g700 and the g700s which has a better sensor I believe. It works wireless or wired.

My G700 has been an amazing performer for over 6 years.. it does have an adapter but you might be able to use a built in wireless signal and if not, it almost sits flush. Regardless, this thing has been a trooper and I would buy it again in a heartbeat.

I know you said you're a fan of the G series mice so you probably know about it but if not, def check it out. There's nothing about it I would change. Weight is perfect, plenty of buttons, great dpi levels, has stood the test of time with zero issues, and battery life is excellent. I have no complaints whatsoever.

You can get the logitech g700 for about 70 bucks on amazon. I just bought one, and it's fantastic.

Four thumb buttons (that are actually useful!), three buttons on the lmb (also useful!) and another button behind the mwheel (useful!). There's another mechanical button that switches the mwheel between smooth and click scrolling. Can have a report rate up to 1000mhz or as low as 125mhz, depending on what kind of activities you're doing. The mouse has a really pleasing rubberized grippy texture too.

It takes 2 AA batteries (and comes with a rechargeable AA batt), so if your charge goes dead you can just swap it out.

This is the only thing I've found that compelled me to finally retire my old mx518 workhorse, but it's shaping up to be one of the better peripherals I've snagged.

I have another Logitech mouse that I like, but it's getting a bit worn out after a couple years now. I'll probably get a Logitech G700 shortly before or after D3 releases. Plenty of buttons so I could keybind everything to the mouse if I wanted to for ease of play.

I recently bought this mouse and am very happy with it. I shied away from mice like the g600 because they had far more buttons than I wanted. The buttons have distinct shapes to avoid misclicking.

For the lazy

Always been a HUGE fan of gaming mice. I've always used Razer and recently a logitech gaming mouse. The key is the sensitivity settings and multiple buttons. You can assign two buttons to set the sensitivity up / down. So if you are streaming / digitizing and need nice slow movement you can set it for very low. Also the multiple buttons come in handy for assigning common tasks so you don't have to mess with the keyboard or moving the mouse away from you work.

That's wonderful to hear, sounds like Logitech has really stepped up its game since the MX518. UberOptions was nice but an addon. Having that amount of control in the menu shown on the Amazon page and that the configuration is separate from the OS, I think you've just sold me on it.

I have some macros tied to programmable buttons on my mouse (Logitech G700). That would work, but at that point why not just add some form buttons to the screen?

I run with a Das Keyboard and a Logitech G700 mouse.

I know a lot of people don't believe in the effect of what a quality mouse/board can do but it does have a major effect on your game. I recommend going mechanical if you can cause if if you're gonna invest the money into a gaming board, you might as well get the best for your buck. And as far as mice go, I stick with Logitechs. They make the best gaming mice, hands down.

Also stay away from the Cyborg R.A.T mice. Those things are expensive pieces of garbage.

I buy logitech mice pretty consistently. I currently use this, which is the best mouse I have ever owned, though it is more expensive.

For a cheaper option, I used the same MX 510 for over 5+ years before I got my current one and love it. It's cheap, has customizable buttons and is incredibly reliable. Hope that helps!

I second this suggestion. This is a link for it at amazon. I've been using this mouse as a wired/wireless solution for over a year now with heavy gaming use. The number of extra buttons proves invaluable for MMO, RTS, and even FPS use. I've found it to be a solid choice and have been using logitech products for a long time now.

It's a bit spendy, but I love my Logitech g700.

It has a high sample rate and adjustable DPI, wired and wireless, selectable ratchet (or whatever it's called) and free wheel mouse action, programmable everything, 13 buttons, comfortable and sturdy construction.

I'm very happy with it. I did a lot of research. The RAT mice are apparently a bit flimsy, and the Razer mice had way too many complaints. Logitech fans were pretty much unanimous in their praise of the g700.

This is just a small suggestion based on preference since your build looks great and there is nothing that I would change, but I have owned the Razer Deathadder and I own the Logitech G500 right now. I like the G500 much better than I did my Deathadder. The G500 has many more features, it has a customizable weight, it's laser instead of optical which means that it is much more precise, it has adjustable DPI with a three level DPI switch on the mouse itself, it saves a ton of profiles that you can switch back and forth between for any game and it has a braided cord, which in my experience is really helpful with the longevity of the mouse all for $10 less than the Deathadder 2013. There is also the G700 which has all of that plus 13 programmable buttons and can switch between wireless and wired if you want to for $3 less than the Deathadder. Here are the links to each one:

EDIT: Just realized that you had Vengeance RAM with a D14, that RAM exceeds the D14's height clearance. You are gonna need RAM that is shorter than 44mm tall, here is a nice set of Patriot Viper 3 RAM. It's lower profile with the same voltage, speed, and it still looks pretty nice.

Sold off my desktop last year because I needed a mobile workstation/gaming setup. I no longer need one. Truth be told, I never needed one, but considering I never move it...no reason to hold on to it.

Total cost of the entire package new (links included to amazon and NewEgg below): $2401 + Shipping charges from NewEgg - I use Amazon Prime, so if I order from there most of the time so I don't pay shipping, but this exact model isn't sold anywhere by NewEgg.

I figure cut the price in half, get a screaming laptop, and a bunch of fantastic peripherals. This is an AMAZING machine, top notch. Just time for me to part ways.

I am willing to accept trades for a desktop, but it must be in mint condition (as my equipment all is), and it must be comparably spec'd.

Used it and it is ok for the price. After trying a bunch of gaming mice (including the best razer had to offer), I settled on the Logitech G700 and have never been happier.

Can't really speak for keyboards, since I'm on a laptop, but for a mouse, I'd recommend the Logitech G700. It's an amazing mouse, in general, with enough programmable keys for the quick stuff (using keyboard key-assignments for the rest). It's wireless when you want it to be but it comes with a cable that both charges and transmits, so it's the best of both worlds. I like it because I use my machine for a lot of stuff other than just gaming and wanted something that would work just as well on both sides of the fence.

The only thing, though: if you're planning on ALSO getting a Logitech wireless keyboard, the G700 doesn't come with a unifying receiver.

Roughly $6000.

The biggest ticket item was the GTX690 ($999), and the three monitors ($324 each). We have about $1600 into the rest of the PC (512g SSD, 3.9ghz Intel Core i7-3770K, 16gb 1600mhz RAM).

The Saitek components are pretty reasonable, the FIP displays add up though. Here is a table of my spreadsheet, it doesn't include the cost of the GTX690, or the PC, or a few misc things like the keyboard.

Mouse: Logitech G700

Headset: A cheap replacement to my old, much better one that broke. It's like $40 if that's your budget or you need a quick replacement. Here it is.

Keyboard: Cheap, great, gaming keyboard from Newegg. Fufills all my needs. It doesn't have fancy volume control, sleep button, etc. The binds on my mouse do that just fine.

I use its big brother, the Logitech G700. Fully customizable buttons, DPS and report adjusters, power profiles, per-game profiles, macros, plugged or wireless, with good software. Best gaming mouse I've ever owned.

I also have a Logitech G13 gamepad, Thrustmaster T-Flight HOTAS X, a wireless Xbox 360 controller, and my two modified Madcatz Fightsticks.

Also, I use a Mionix Sargas 900 extra large mousepad.

I have the logitech g700 and I like it a lot. I don't know about it for CM wiz specifically but I really like the feel of it and the button layout.

By the way, you probably already know this but just in case you don't: for a CM wiz you can just hold down the keyboard buttons for freeze, armor, and the explosion rather than pressing them repeatedly.

I got this mouse and I use the 4 Keys on the left for QWER and the 3 on the front for DFB (Flash, ignite, back).

Well I'm going to assume you can use your mouse hand to hit alt, ctrl, caps lock and tab. I think mostly classes only have 15-20 meaningful abilities.

bind mousewheel up, mousewheel down, and mousewheel click with tab/ctrl/alt. That's 9 abilities you've bound already. Get a mouse with a few extra buttons and you can easily bind every ability you have. No need to click!

Try the Logitech G700, I find it's well suited to do the 15-20 things you'll need to do without being overwhelming.

Even without a fancy mouse, you can still bind just about all of your abilities that aren't big CDs. There's no reason you can't be a competitive playing the class that appeals to you the most.
