If you opened some sort of go fund me page I would happily contribute some amount to try and help you out with this situation. I think it'd be terrible for this kid to lose a potentially great relationship with someone who cares about him over this.

That said how much was lost? Do you remember what his favorites were? Those are probably the most important ones to replace.

I really want everything to work out well for you, even though it's a really sucky situation to be in. I collected all kinds of cards as a kid including pokemon, and Magic:the gathering in my teenage and adult years. You may consider getting card sleeves for more "valued" ones like: http://www.amazon.com/Ultra-Pro-Card-Premium-Sleeves/dp/B0002TT3NE

The sleeves I saw suggested here on Reddit, Ultra Pro Card Premium Card Sleeves Pack (100 Sleeves) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002TT3NE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_c4cHAb6B7VS8X.
The container I found on Amazon, Ultra PRO All Team 2-Piece Storage Box, 4 Compartment, Clear https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002TT3JI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_D5cHAbRK6XX4J

If there's ever more than just chiller, I'll have to buy another container.

It’s good that they’ve got the cross-branding, but not at that price. The Ultra Pro Platinums are great and much cheaper. My board will recognize at least a 10x stack with these on.

They are little slips of plastic that you slide over cards to protect them from damage and/or make them easier to shuffle. Here's an example
