I am happy to elaborate on any of these items, including the brands, if you want to know more.
You may also consider the Ultrasone HFI-580s. [It looks like Amazon is out of stock but you may be able to find another retailer with a similar price.]
I bought a pair for my mom last Christmas and they're great. I've actually started leaving my Ultrasone Pro 900s at my apartment over the weekends when I go up to visit and I just borrow her headphones. The cable is really long, though, which can be a bit of an annoyance.
They sound great and, in my opinion, look pretty darn awesome. I haven't listened to the Audio Technica set but, considering my positive experiences with Ultrasone (Pro 900, HFI-780, HFI-580), I'd opt for the HFI-580s in a heartbeat; even if it's just on the basis of looks. I'd love to try the M50s sometime but they'd have to be pretty darn good to edge out the Ultrasone offerings. They're certainly not a flat sounding headphone but that may be an appealing aspect to many. I love the Ultrasone sound signature.
I don't remember exactly what came with the headphones but it should include a pretty cool demo disc with a bunch of binaural recordings that sound really cool. Some of them really demonstrate the bass capacity really well. The S-Logic driver arrangement is also impressive. I ripped them in a lossless format and keep them on my Zune HD for those times that a more technical demonstration hits the spot.
Good luck with your decision. Considering your roots, you're in for a real treat regardless of what you end up with.
So...here are a few suggestions at this price range:
Audio Technica ATH-M50x: $120 (Probably the most recommended headphone ever. Somewhat boomy bass at times).

Ultrasone HFI-580 S-Logic: $132.98 (Tighter bass than the M50x, typical Ultrasone v-curve, and pretty fun).
http://www.amazon.com/Ultrasone-HFI-580-Professional-Closed-back-Headphones/dp/B00101UHS8
Beyerdynamic DT770: $137.58 (Another classic. Built like a tank. Probably the second "brightest" pair of cans on this list next to the Ultrasone 780).

AKG K553 Pro: $172.99 (My office cans. These are fairly flat with slightly accentuated bass. Their mids are a bit veiled. They can be had for $120 on Massdrop sometimes and are probably worth closer to that amount than the $170+ they usually go for).
Ultrasone HFI-780 S-Logic: $173.85 (Currently wearing these right now while while listening to Hotel California. These headphones have a strong v-curve and can be fatiguing due to how bright their treble is. However, with the right music, they can be really, really fun).

Sennheiser Momentum: $188.90 (I've not heard these personally, so I can't give any appropriate opinion).

Shure SRH840: $189.95 (I've not heard these personally, so I can't give any appropriate opinion. However, in my limited experience, Shure's tend to be flat and cough boring).
http://www.amazon.com/Shure-SRH840-Professional-Monitoring-Headphones/dp/B002DP8IEK
Sony MDR1R: $199.95 (I didn't spend too much time with these as I wasn't very impressed. A few other options I listed above are much more fun or balanced, but I figured I'd put them on the list anyways).

I almost always suggest Audio Technica M50x at this price range. That's not because I think they're the most fun or balanced. It's because they're a great entry level headphone for someone that doesn't know exactly what they want from their daily driver. If someone is sure that they like a nice v-curve, I'm not afraid to suggest Ultrasones or Beyerdynamics. I really want to try out the Sennheiser Momentums, but I haven't had the chance yet.
I have a couple of Sennheisers myself. A great bang for your buck pair are the HD280s, which can be occasionally found for $60-65. If you wear glasses they can be a bit tight, but they sound great and also do an excellent job at isolating outside noise.
That said the Ultrasone HFI-580 is currently at half price and has great reviews on Amazon, as well as a good review at head-fi ( 2 ).
I have these Ultrasone HFI-580 that are great quality. Got them around $150 a few years ago, used them for like 3 months (don't use over hear very often) then I lost them in my house and couldn't find them. Just found them in one of the drawers I never checked. But I have already bought new headphones so don't need them.
The sound is great, nice bass to it and quality highs as well. The comfort is pretty good. Not too hard not too soft cushioning. I was very happy with them. Wish I hadn't lost them...could've saved $250 I spent on pioneer headphones.
I'll sell my pair to you for pretty cheap if you're interested. Let me know.

I'm going to objectively disagree there. Take a look at the Amazon reviews for the M50 and the reviews for the HFI-580. There's a clear advantage for the M50 to get 5 star reviews compared to 4 star and both have a nice sample size. I think most people DO enjoy the M50 more and these reviews prove the point. I'm not saying people will dislike the HFI-580, I just think it's more likely they'll like the M50.
If you ever do decide to splurge on good headphones, Ultrasone is a brand I highly recommend. My friend who used to be a DJ had a pair and he swore by them, so I spent the money on them. Best quality headphones I've ever owned and I realize not everyone has the money, but I don't regret buying them at all.

They both benefit from a headphone amp.... in my experience the DT770 needs a headphone amp to get decent bass.
Ultrasone HFI 580s are way better than ATH-M50s for Electronic. Their bass is a lot crisper and doesn't get as muddy.
I always though that the "Burn-In" effect dealt with the ear pads finally being broken in and conforming to your head size.
Ear pads make a big difference in sound. I switched out the leather pads on my HFI-580s for some replacement pads from Beyerdynamic. The sound signature drastically changed.

Not sure if you discounted 580's because they're too pricy or because they're not the right sound or look for you, but I wrote this anyway. Hope it helps in some way.

Mine came in about a week ago, only $130 USD from Amazon.
This is my first pair of 'good' headphones, and I'm really impressed. But because of that I can't compare or speak for any other headphones, just give my opinion of these.
They seem really durable, I'd be surprised if they snapped on me any time soon. They seem to have a fairly strong build all around and can collapse into a tiny bundle. The cord is pretty long but that's not really a problem if you just tie some of it up. They sound fine unamped, I got a fiio e7 and while I notice a difference I wouldn't call it essential, just nice but for your budget don't worry about it.
In terms of sound they seem really balanced (I've listened to ipod earbuds and some logitech headset so.. my standards have been low.. also I've been told these are fairly bassy headphones and infact not balanced, but that's probably just me adjusting to new gear so don't take my balanced opinion with anything but a grain of salt, much like this entire wall of text) but the bass is the most noticeable thing. Really clear [warm] and nice sounding. Also the high range is amazing to hear, I was listening to some Tool as I heard their recordings are great quality and heard an entirely new vocal line that I've never heard before in one song.
The only problem I have with these is that they're bigger than I expected, the headband is fine, but the actual bits over your ears [what's the word for that?] is quite big. This isn't really a problem just makes them a little less portable and I feel like they'd be a little conspicuous wearing them around. All this said they look really nice, sound really nice and feel durable for a pretty nice price.
Edit: Forgot to mention as when I was researching I heard they were uncomfortable, they're not, but prolonged use can start to get a bit like that. After a couple of hours you can notice them becoming a bit less comfortable but nothing bad enough to make you want to take them off.
These are $135.00.
Good sound, Closed back, No Mic, Comfortable and have Surround Sound.
I bought these and they're pretty awesome. They have great bass response and very clear highs for closed-back cans, and the 50 mm drivers are almost impossible to blow out.
