Agree with the Dr. Grip but also recommend Uni Jetstream

Uni Jetstream 4&1

Has black, blue, green, and red ballpoint ink + mechanical pencil. Ink is available in 0.38, 0.5, and 0.7, takes 0.5 lead.

This pen got me through pharmacy school and doesn’t smear on those pesky Rx labels like gel pens do.

Refills can also be purchased on amazon or jetpens.

I thought about buying some kind of tablet for notes, but then I bought this multi-color pen instead. I feel like taking notes on an iPad is more trouble than it's worth. Sure the plotting features in apps like Notability look nice, but I can't imagine actually spending time sifting through menus and whatnot in the middle of class. The pen helps me organize my notes in much the same way I imagine I would if I were using a tablet, for a small, small fraction of the cost.

Using expensive pens during your clinical years on the wards is a bad idea

a) fountain pens can drip and smear, this is annoying when you just want something written down, and they do not play well with white coats.

b) Fountain pens don't work well when you need to put pressure down (triplicate copies)

c) You are bound to lose a pen/let someone borrow a pen during your training.

I'm a huge pen addict (I've spent waay too much money on Jetpens). What I suggest to everyone who loves pens is to keep the fancy ones at home. When you are in a hospital you want something that writes fast, dries fast and leaves a consistent line. My favorite ink is the Uni JetStream ink. I use the following two pens during work

Uni Jetstream 0.7mm black

Uni Jetstream 4+1 multipen if you are feeling fancy

uni jetsream 4+1! Not only does it write incredibly, it also includes a pencil.
