I have several Ctronics 720p cameras which seem to be discontinued now, and several SV3C 1080p cameras which do the job just fine. I've had no issues with either model and I've been running them for over a year now. Hard to beat the price!

I just posted this over at /r/HomeImprovement this morning:

I've been using these. They are pretty good for the price. These are wired only, as another poster suggested, wireless cameras can fairly easily be defeated.

You will also need something to record. I use ZoneMinder, which isn't the easiest thing to setup, but it's gotten much easier in recent years. If you don't know anything about linux, or just can't figure the installation, ask some neighbor kid to set it up for you. You will need a dedicated computer for this, running 24/7.

I've had great success running cheap-o $40 SV3C cameras and BlueIris in a windows VM. BlueIris wasn't free or open source, but it was the best I found when I was experimenting.

I have 4 cameras and the VM usually sits at 30-40% CPU doing all the work.

Here's one on Amazon.

I used these two cameras in a recent install I did at home

personally, I think the Zosi performs better and is more reliable, but I have the other one mounted outside so that may be a factor.

They are super cheap and made in china, but I VLAN'd them off and used firewall rules to block all traffic unless it is going to my camera server on the same VLAN.

Video and build quality are not bad. No Wifi, only LAN with POE power.
I can provide pics/screen shots if you want.

I have used three of these outside with no issue for over a year. I am impressed with the nighttime recording and the day time recordings are just as good. I used iSpy which is free to use or for $5 a month you can subscribe and watch your cameras on your phone or any web browser

It's a generic Chinese ip camera. I wouldn't recommend it unless you're computer savvy but it works surprisingly well if you can work around the caveats.

Thanks
These are the cameras I have. I only have 2 of these right now. Blueiris is running as a VM on a HP DL380 G6 under proxmox. I have a UniFi 24 Port 250W POE Switch but wasent sure if it would be able to power that many cameras and 2 unifi pro AP's

Better enough than this to justify 2x the price?

I have heard good things about this, also you will need to buy a PoE switch if you didn't know that already. Make sure you buy good gelled cat5e so you don't find yourself rerunning Ethernet here in a few years

Depending how large your property is, some of these may not be the cheapest, but I will suggest them anyway. I've gone with suggessting IP cameras because they are cost effective in comparison to film counterparts and are usually pretty easy to set up.

This first is a bit more expensive, and I imagine more so in Canada, but I've heard good things about it.

If you want to buy some decent and cheap ones to set up, Amazon had recently started recommending these .

As with all purchases, take your time, do your research and see what fits the needs of you and your family most.

I used these cheap cameras outside

They do have a couple "phone home" scripts. I've outlined them in my review of the cameras. Ok me and Ill send you a direct link to the review. They're outside in Alaska, wind sometimes blows 60mph, freezing rain, snow. They work great. Using blue Iris
