Thanks, u/ianmillham! Yeah, well it's a hair salon, so no dog in residence. What can you do?

I don't generally know what the hell I'm doing with watercolor. Ultimately it does what it wants, so I just hope for the best.

One book that has been really helpful/inspiring/fun/awesome is Urban Watercolor Sketching by the German punk rock drummer-turned-artist Felix Scheinberger. Can't recommend it highly enough.

Glad it's helpful, and yes you can keep and do whatever with it. I'm really bad at doing larger strokes for some reason so big pictures tend to bring out my worst techniques. Those parallel lines on the lamp nearly ruined everything until I realized I was in photoshop and could redo pretty much all of it over and over to get it right! I also had an easier time nudging lines in and out for the same reason.

I picked up drawing in dark black pens at about the same time I realized how nice watercolors looked. The plan was to paint over some pen sketches so that my brain couldn't complain about erasing or trying again. With permanent mediums you can only keep moving forward which is a huge relief for me. It also helped that I ran into this book which fit my needs fairly well.

Reminds me a lot of a book I have: Urban Watercolor Sketching: A Guide to Drawing, Painting, and Storytelling in Color

I've done a few general sketches but really need to be consistent at it. How often do you find yourself sketching on average?
