It's the password reset key. I'm in IT and it is useful for getting into computers that aren't cooperating with the domain (or whatever). You can do everything it does through command prompt, but it just makes enabling a local admin account so much easier.

u/Jakememe124 · 3 pointsr/Windows10

I think you are gonna have to reinstall Windows.

If you have 20 dollars to spare, you can get one of these usb recovery keys and reset the password. You will need to boot from the USB drive in order for it to work

Here's a Amazon link: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01BO6604S/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1519613289&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=Password+Reset+Key&dpPl=1&dpID=41RRDIgNotL&ref=plSrch

This was featured in a LTT video if you wanna check it out in action.

To be fair, finding workarounds to the school's solutions could very well be teaching and inspiring a lifelong career choice, so perhaps that should also be considered, since the only job of education is to give meaning, purpose, and fulfillment to people's lives.

Beyond that, students can easily run programs from lots of places that aren't usually blocked, or even use something like this to copy the main user, wipe the password, and do what they want.

u/MYCRAFTisbest · 2 pointsr/gpdwin

If it were a Microsoft account you could just reset it online. I think it probably makes most sense to re-install windows since a lot of people recommend doing so anyway. There are ways to clear the password but I don't know of them other than using this tool link.

P.S. You tried the password with capslock on right?

u/SpecialityToS · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

If you don't want to go through a lot of steps that may be confusing, this might be good...

Disclaimer, I have no clue about this stuff and anything others say is to be held at a higher status than my comment.

Here is the one that was used in the video

Invest in one of these. I've never used one, but it can wipe the admin password to blank, change any user's password and create new users. Pretty nifty.

I believe there is a USB that you can buy to unlock the computer and reset it, but I have never used one (based on all the reviews it works, and it's cheaper that buying a new copy of windows if you can't get the pc open)

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01BO6604S/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1487246907&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=Password+Reset+Key&dpPl=1&dpID=41pqh3NkimL&ref=plSrch

Can you take a picture of the inside of the pc? (I'm curious)

Yep just follow the steps in the link. Apparently Reddit doesn't like Amazon's link shortener and deleted my other reply... If that's too much an issue with command prompt etc Amazon has fancy USB keys with interfaces for simplicity. Waste of $20 because the steps are simple.

If you can boot from USB then you can get Password reset key II and use it that way. It lets you get in any Windows machines as long as you can boot to it.
If not you can try some other methods mentioned below. I just wanted to offer another vector that you can try.

Heres a link to buy the USB.

What about the passwordresetkey? It's $22 on amazon and it's basically a bootable USB drive that can strip the password from any user account. Here's an amazon link. (also as others have said, make sure to clone the disk just in case some encrypted files get destroyed).

(an amazon link https://www.amazon.com/Recovery-Password-Better-Windows-Versions-7/dp/B01BO6604S).
I believe LinusTechTips made a video about it a while ago.

Sorry for your loss, I wish you the best of luck.

okay, as I see it( and my knoledge is limited on this ) you have 3 options:

  1. Get your password/PIN somehow right(lol)
  2. Get a password reset key ( https://www.amazon.com/Recovery-Password-Internet-Connection-Passwords/dp/B01BO6604S/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=password+reset+key&qid=1557688932&s=gateway&sr=8-2 ) and reset it
  3. check if there is any known bug related to what you were doing previoulsy.

Also, here is an LTT video on the password reset key stuff

> It is built to have no option to reset the password.

Why haven't other laptop manufactuers integrated the samething into their laptops? This seems like a fatal security flaw.

> Just looked into my P50's bios. I can lock down:
at device type level (USB, LAN, bluetooth,...)
restrict firmware upgrade/downgrade
bottom cover / internal storage tamper detection
define if pwd or fingerprint is necessary for either bios access or booting the device
can lock down boot order
AFAIK, many business laptops have roughly this feature set. Just using my P50 as example, because it was easiest to look into it.

Does this mean stuff like this https://www.amazon.co.uk/Recovery-Password-Better-Windows-Versions-7/dp/B01BO6604S/ref=sr_1_3?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1543026367&sr=1-3&keywords=Password+Reset+Key is pretty much useless if the BIOS cannot be accessed?

> There should be an option to only allow certain devices access to the usb drive
This is the tricky part. It's easy to lock down a port, but really hard to have a device specific whitelist.
Like /u/jmnugent, i have never seen a device with some type of user defined USB device whitelist in its bios.
It should be possible to realize something like that on an OS level.

I only want to do this so no-one can use a recovery usb drive to have full access, but if I do it on an OS level would it still be effective?

Assuming you have physical proximity to the computer and some time you can either make one of these or buy it here:

You could wipe the drive with windows on it and then reinstall it , however , for that you will need to have a bootable USB with Windows 10 on it, you could use Kali Linux to remove the password, or use the Password Reset Key https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01BO6604S/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_xD8HDbVMBREX6

In my experience, wiping the drive is always the easiest, however, you will lose all saved data

u/ProTrader12321 · 1 pointr/IllegalLifeProTips

Easy. Get a cracked version, how ever you want to do so. Then force boot in safe mode, or just bypass windows security(its utter shit) people legit sell flashdrives with malware that will get you straight into windows full admin credentials. Here. Then just run as admin on your game.

Unless you school actually puts much effort into it this should work.

u/Cjmcgiv · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

I'd try this, Linus tried it out and it seemed to work, it also have favorable reviews on amazon. It's one option.

Its a recovery tool, essentially a password breaker that lets you get into a locked machine. If you found it at work, I wonder if someone was up to something shady.
