Sorry to hi-jack your comment but I understand why people like Beats. The bass and the like that they produce sound really cool especially for Hip-Hop music which is Beat's target audience. This is coming from someone who owns multiple pairs of Sennheisers, some Grado's, and pair of Audio Technica's. If your choice of music is rap and hip-hop, those simply don't do that type of music justice. Its something that the audio-elitists/circlejerkers never take into consideration.

If you're looking for something comparable to the beats (ie Bass), I'd recommend the V-Moda Crossfades. Sound-wise, every forum says they're superior (with technical jargon that I won't get into) while I'd argue they're also better quality and build-wise. All for 100 bucks.

Read on for yourselves.

Looking for a good pair of headphones for listening to musis and gaming on my laptop.

Budget: Flexible around $100

Source: My laptop (I use it as a desktop so I do not need these headphones to be portable)

Type of Headphone: Closed Headphones

Preferred Tonal Balance: Semi balanced leaning towards bass but still able to have a wide range. (I'm new to this so if you think this is wrong for the type of music I am listening to just tell my please)

Past Headphones: JVC IEMS. I still have them and will continue to use them for portable use.

Preferred Music: Electronic( Nightcore, Nightstep, Dubstep, House, Trap, Glitch Hop, etc.) Classic Rock.

Location: USA

Headphones I am looking at right now: Right now I have had Sony MDR10Rs, Shure SRH440s, and V-MODA Crossfade LPs all recommended for me and I think they suit what I am looking for and want to know your opinions.

Side Note I have also been recommended m50's by audiotechnica but someone else here said they are uncomfortable and have too narrow a soundstage for gaming.

40 dollar headphones are actually... not that bad... if you buy right.

Now, I would put segmentation of headphones like so:

0-20 dollars: The "I'm probably going to break these, so I'm not going to spend much money," segment. If you're not buying them for risky usage scenarios, spend more money.

$30-50: Here's where you'll start seeing your money doing some work. Sony makes some fantastic headphones in this range. Something like the Sony MDR7506, Sony MDR-V55/BRs, JVC HARX700s, HARX 900s, or Audio Technica ATH-M30s.

$100-200: You aren't going to see significant gains over $50 cans until you break the $100 dollar mark. For instance, the ATH-M50s or Sennheiser 558s are (supposedly) fantastic. I personally have a pair of V-Moda Crossfade LP2s that give me fantastic audio quality to my ears.

Above that, I haven't done a whole lot of research. I believe segmentation hits again and you won't see a good gain until you start spending around 250-300 for studio-grade stuff, then another step up to 500+ for high-end studio and audiophile-grade equipment, but that's just kind of what I remember seeing.

v-moda crossfade lp's, made almost completly out of metal, weather proof and are the best headphones I have heard yet. They have 50mm dedicated subs and are about $140. you can also get different colored sheilds for the ear cups. http://www.amazon.com/Crossfade-Over-Ear-Noise-Isolating-Headphone-Gunmetal/dp/B003BYRGKY

u/CeReAL_K1LLeR · 3 pointsr/batman

For those who are interested, the cans are V-Moda Crossfade LPs that can be picked up on Amazon for half price from retail (my particular pair are Gunmetal, but they come in other colors). The ear shields on the sides are interchangeable and can be custom ordered and laser engraved from the official V-Moda website in various colors, and this is the image I used for engraving... cost around $50 for the custom etching if memory serves correctly.

On the nerdier side of audio, the headphone amp/DAC (digital audio converter) combo sitting on the left is a portable FiiO e07k Andes, all being played from a Google Nexus 10.

Out of the box, the LPs are a bit bassy (or "muddy" as some people call it), but using an amp really cleans everything up, in my personal opinion, and pushes the cans to their potential. For those who don't really consider themselves "audiophiles" or whatever you want to call it, headphone amps make a pretty big difference on mid - high range audiogear... near night and day in my opinion.

Hope this answers any questions about the set up! :D

I have the V-Moda Crossfade LP with the BoomPro mic and I am 100% satisfied. V-Moda makes extremely good headphones. I picked up the Crossfade LP's on sale from Amazon for $79.95 (I think it was a lightening deal)

The V-Moda's sound is simply stunning. Great bass and a crisp soudstage. I wear them for watching TV and they never feel uncomfortable (I have a larger than average head). I also use these for my Surface on plane trips as the noise-isolating is fantastic. I cannot recommend V-Moda's enough!! Seriously one of the best (if not the best) headphones I have ever had the pleasure of listening to. If/when I find the M-100 on sale, I am grabbing a pair. Plus the build quality is second to none. You can literally throw them around and they will not break (there is a video somewhere of the owner of V-Moda twisting and bending the hell out of the headphones and they stayed perfect - no damage). They are not to heavy and not too light.

I also have the Turtle Beach DX11 for the 360 and these are, by far, the worst sounding headphones I have ever used. There is no bass at all and the sound will crackle if turned up too loud. The only good about these is that the are comfortabel but that is because they are so damn light due to EVERYTHING being plastic. I will never purchase anything from Turtle Beach again.

I have a set of these they are very nice.

I also have a set of these both are great value for the sound.

The vmoda's are one's that sit on my desk but they come with a semi hard case and a detachable headphone plug which makes them less likely to shit out.

Can I ask why you're waiting for E3 before deciding on a headset? Especially when it sounds like you game on PC and Xbox. In my opinion, headset technology isn't making huge leaps in technology in monthly (or even annually, IMO again) increments. So what's on the market now isn't going to be outdated anytime soon. Best bang for your buck is getting a pair of quality headphones and either a compatible mic or a mod mic. Of course you would most likely need a Y splitter for the Xbox one but those are cheap and going this route means you aren't paying nearly as much for the company name that's stamped on the headset.

Here's my setup:

VMODA Crossfade LPs

VMODA Boom Mic

VMODA XL Ear Pads

After linking all that stuff, I noticed the price on all three of those items actually went up from when I purchased them around a year ago. Headset was $125, Mic and XL Ear Pads were $20 each.

I have V-Moda Crossfade LPs and i Love them. I find them excellent and on amazon they are a steal for 100 bucks. also they have awesome bass (good for electronic music). http://www.amazon.com/Crossfade-Over-Ear-Noise-Isolating-Headphone-Gunmetal/dp/B003BYRGKY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1346816148&sr=8-1&keywords=v-moda+crossfade+lp

u/aspbergerinparadise · 2 pointsr/buildapcsales

I got the V-Moda Crossfade LP for $75 through amazon last year. I think that was a better deal than this, and I'd wait for something like that to come up again. "On ear" is kind of the worst of both worlds. Too bulky to be any more portable than an "over ear" set, but also not as comfortable.

u/Augustburnscarl · 2 pointsr/Metalcore

I use these. I got them a while ago on black friday and they've lasted me forever and sound great.

u/SenselessNoise · 2 pointsr/fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu

I agree Beats are shit. Skullcandy is only mildly better, because they seem only slightly overpriced, whereas Beats are ridiculously overpriced for their performance.

I also find it funny that they're made by Monster; you know, the guys that make super expensive cables that aren't really better than other cables, just cost exponentially more?

I personally love my V-Moda Crossfades. They're comfortable (if you have smaller ears), they come with 2 kevlar cords (a long normal one and one with a line-in mic for your phone), and are pretty stylish. They're more designed for bass than anything, but everything from Mozart to Pendulum has been an experience.

u/idee18554 · 2 pointsr/gadgets

I really like my V-moda crossfade LP headphones these headphones are extremly comfy, my job is alot of sitting so i've listen 600+ hours on them (also if you shop around you could get them for ~$100) + Mod Mic $50 would give you a nice setup.

u/VlRU5 · 2 pointsr/headphones

"Preferred Tonal Balance" is simply how do you like your music, example: "I listen to Rap so I want as much bass as possible!". With your taste it would be safe to say you want a bit more bass.

Personally I wouldn't recommend buying something from Bose unless you really wanted good noise-cancellation (tip: you don't). They are a bit pricey for what you get.
At that price range you might want to check out headphones from Audio Technica, specifically the M50's or the M40X's. Now I like the M50's because they have nice slightly punchy bass but it doesn't overpower the rest of the song. Sounds pretty good with Glitch-Hop and other electronic music in general IMO. I've had them for 3 years now and is a solid common go-to with their sweet price tag.

The list goes on and on since around $100 is where you start getting good headphones but i'll throw in another two headphones for you to consider: Shure's SRH440. For more bass, check out the V-MODA Crossfade LP. They're quite stylish, come in lots of colors and have a more bassy sound. V-MODA has a few other headphone line-ups you might like if you like their headphones.

Hope that helps, give us updates!

In terms of BIFL:
V-Moda Crossfades
http://www.amazon.com/V-MODA-Crossfade-Over-Ear-Noise-Isolating-Headphone/dp/B003BYRGKY

I've owned a pair for 4 years and I still love them to death. Vmoda uses metal and leather to construct the band/earcups and they come with a hardshell carry case and kevlar headphone cords (never tangle). I have zero complaints with these headphones except that the leather on the ear cups takes a week or two to really break in and get comfortable.

The sound quality is SOLID on these. It wont shake your skull with bass or allow you to hear every single note, but they sound very good. I've heard plenty of headphones in the $300+ price range that blow these out of the water, but these are my favorite that I've found under $200. I'm not sure if they're considered "noise cancelling," but when I have these on my head with music playing I can't hear shit.

I use these headphones primarily for my everyday listening as well as DJing large house parties.

Try V-Moda Crossfade LPs or LP 2s as they have great bass and look great

u/QuipA · 1 pointr/headphones

> Balanced except for bass, which I'd like to be strong if possible.

That's unfortunately not how it works. If you have a strong bass presence, mids will suffer. You can't have strong bass in a neutral headphone. People also tend to confuse more bass vs. good bass. Good bass is subtle and may have less of a kick to it, but it has texture.

> Isolation: Some or none

Since you state you'll be using these headphone with a phone, I assume you want to wear them outside and in public. In this case isolation is an absolute requirement. Open back headphones will leak the music to the outside and people around you can hear what you are listening to.

I suggest you take a look at these models:

  • Brainwavz HM5 // NVX XPT 100: Very comfortable, neutral sounding headphones with a surprisingly wide stage for a closed back headphone in this price range. Unfortunately, they are rather bulky and cannot be easily carried around; they are meant to be used at home.

  • ATH M40X. A good looking and neutral sounding model (with a light bass tilt) that has a detachable cable and swiveling cups. Can't really be beaten at the current amazon price. But naturally this pair has its disadvantages as well. The relatively small pleather pads only allow for sufficient comfort (nowhere near the godlike HM5 / XPT100 pads) and the soundstage is rather "intimate" (read narrow / small). However, the music you mentioned doesn't really benefit from great soundstage and I think the M40X will be a good match.

I think I might still recommend the Crossfade LP's... People love them, the highs and mids are sure to probably be the best you've ever heard if you've only used apple earbuds. They're also very durable and pretty nice looking.

Budget - 150-170$ hard limit

Source - Laptop, iPhone, DJ Mixer

Requirements for Isolation - Isolation is very important for me, because most of the time I will use them on the train or DJing

Preferred Type of Headphone Over-Ear preferred

Preferred tonal balance - Kind of a bass lover, but not exaggerated

Past headphones - Beats Studio (yeah, I know... I was young and silly)

Preferred Music - Electronic Music (especially Trap & Electro House), Hip Hop

Location - Italy (don't worry about it, Italian Amazon works great and the prices are very similar to the American store, the only con is that sometimes they have less products)

I'm Considering

[V-MODA Crossfade LP] (http://www.amazon.com/V-MODA-Crossfade-Over-Headphones-Gunmetal/dp/B003BYRGKY/ref=pd_cp_e_0) [129$]
The cheapest option, durable and DJ-friendly, but what about the sound quality? Can it stand a comparison with the other headphones?

[Audio-Technica ATH-M50x] (http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-M50x-Professional-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B00HVLUR86/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1412457622&sr=1-2&keywords=audio+technica+ath-m50) [169$]
From what I heard, great sound quality, but is it possible to use them as DJ headphones without breaking them in 1 month?

[Sennheiser HD25-1 II] (http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD25-1-II-Closed-Back-Headphones/dp/B000TDZOXG/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1412457578&sr=1-1&keywords=sennheiser+hd+25-1+ii) [205$]
Possibly the best option, but out of my price range at the moment.. Do you think they are worth the extra price? If so, I can start to put my liver on auction on eBay :D

Thanks for all your kind suggestions, hope you all have a great day :)

Budget | $140. I really would not to go higher. The cheaper the better.
Source | Spotify on LG G2 and on Macbook Pro
Requirements for Isolation | Doesn't really matter. I plan to use them whenever I'm sitting for long periods of time like home or at the library etc.
Preferred type of Headphone | Full-sized, closed, comfortable.
Preferred tonal balance | I don't really know much about highs, mids, lows but I do like me some bass. I don't want it to ruin everything else but I like bass.
Past Headphones | I had ATH-M30s that were okay. I haven't had them in a while but nothing spectacular. Other than that just IEMs.
Preferred Music | I like rap and rock but I have phases with different genres.
What I've seen | After searching for hours I've narrowed it down to ATH-M50s, Creative Aurvana Live! 2, Sony MDR7506 and MDRV6, NVX XPT100, and the V-MODA Crossfade LP

I love my Crossfade LP headset, which is plug-and-play with the PS4 chat function via the controller plug.

Editing to add that these are wired, not wireless, but they are big (I too haz big head), comfortable, and deliver excellent sound quality and isolation.

u/FatS4cks · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

Drop the headset. You're already getting a pretty damn good mic, so I'd recommend the hd598 if you listen to more traditional music, crossfade LP if you like electronica or rap srh440 if you don't care and just want something that sounds totally neutral, like in a studio.

Probably get a mechanical keyboard instead of the apex, I recommend the CM Quickfire TK, Logitech g710+ or the Corsair K70.

u/CannedTofu · 1 pointr/gadgets

I would highly suggest the VMODA Crossfades for gaming and music.

I think the noise reduction in these is perfect for keeping ambient noise down, to the point of allowing you to enjoy music or in-game sounds.

I have played several games including FPS, RTS, and some fun indie games with different types of soundtracks. The ability to hone in on where sounds are coming from is really solid in these headphones.

They are comfortable, and stylish (my least concern but it was a nice bonus!). They are light, but sturdy. They also sell a microphone attachment which was an amazing addition. I definitely recommend it.

TL;DR: I had the same desire, gaming+music, and the VMODA Crossfades deliver.

Sennheiser HD280 Pros although you already said they aren't great for long sessions are some of the best for isolation. They have a 32db attenuation which is ridiculous - for comparison most 'hearing safety' ear muffs for construction, shooting, etc are 28db. They also have a very good sensitivity meaning you won't have to crank them as loud or need an amp.

The only other alternative I can think of is the V-Moda Crossfade LPs which are made for live play (the LP = Live Play) and claim to have good isolation:

http://www.amazon.com/V-MODA-Crossfade-Over--Headphones-Gunmetal/dp/B003BYRGKY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1412112231&sr=8-1&keywords=v+moda+crossfade

u/maxbemisisgod · 1 pointr/headphones

Looking to get my first pair of on-ear/over ear headphones and need some help!

Budget - No more than $150

Source - Both laptop and iPhone

Requirements for Isolation - I would like a good amount of isolation as I plan on using these both in my apartment (3 roommates so it occasionally gets noisy) and on long trips where I'd like to block out most background noise e.g. on a train or plane. Since I plan on using these to Skype as well, being able to hear myself talk is important, just so I know I'm not shouting or anything (I'm a noob to headphones so for all I know this will never be an issue, but just making sure!)

Preferred Type of Headphone - Definitely closed because I may use them in quiet areas like a library. No innate preference for on-ear or over-ear but they need to be super comfortable (wearable for anywhere from 2-5 hours) and portable

Preferred tonal balance - I would like an overall balanced pair

Past headphones - I've always gotten some of the cheapest IEMs I can find ($15-25) at CVS/Best Buy, or the Apple earbuds. Right now I'm using a pair of Philips IEMs, no idea of the model.

Preferred Music - I listen to a lot of indie rock, indie pop, but also anything from dream pop to post-rock to the occasional hip-hop.

Other important info: I'd like to use the headphones for a wide range of activities: Music, TV shows/movies, Skyping, and gaming. I'm not a hardcore FPS gamer (more into RPGs and relaxed multiplayer games), and I care more about noise isolation than sound stage, but I don't want the headphones to be considered crappy for gaming either. But my standards are pretty low: As long as they fulfill the same quality that a cheap pair of CVS earbuds gives me when gaming, then I'm fine with it.

A few headphones have caught my eye: V-MODA Crossfade M80 (I know they're on-ear so I'm worried about long-term comfort), the V-MODA Crossfade LP (probably more comfortable than the M80?), and the AT ATH-M50 since they seem like a very popular entry-level choice

I'm open to a lot of suggestions as long as they are closed, very comfortable, decently portable, and are acceptable to use for gaming. Thanks!

I personally use these headphones

with this microphone

Not only did people say my sound quality increased over my 80$ gaming headphones but my headphone sound quality skyrocketed as well. Maybe no directly comparable but it was still a jarringly nice switch.

I personally love the Razer Taipan ambidextrous gaming mouse, it's perfect for someone like me with big hands.

I've always had a problem with headphones falling apart on me, either some plasticy bit snaps or the cord breaks etc, I don't think I'm going to have that problem with the V-Moda Crossfade LP since everything important is made of metal / replaceable, it also helps that they're the most comfortable pair of headphones I've personally worn.

Invest in a nice pair of headphones.

I recommend V-Moda Crossfades. They are extremely high quality, have great customer support, and are definitely BIFL. Those things are tested to military standards while maintaining a badass look. They also sound much better than a pair of Beats that you could get for the same (if not higher) price.

(IIRC you can also custom order some laser-engraved sideplates. Yes, those metal plates on the sides are interchangeable.)
