>i can't afford to buy new controllers every year

Just an FYI, I actually just replaced a joystick in a joycon that my wife uses. She gets competitive and not only did the joystick have drift, she ended up ripping off the rubber top of the joycon. It only cost $7.50 to replace it (2 pack of new joysticks was $14.99 on Amazon and comes with all the tools you need). Works beautifully now. There's videos online to walk you through the steps to fix it too.

For anyone looking for a link to the ones I got, they were these ones.

Order a joycon repair kit off Amazon

Used this one myself, no complaints.

Joystick drift?

I'll describe it like this: In Breath of the Wild when I am not holding the controller Link will subtly move forward. In the game I would be standing at the edge of a precipice and he would tip-toe off of the edge.

If you go into the calibration settings where you can see what the joycon's joystick is inputting you will see that the signal it is receiving is "dancing" around center just slightly (when it should be perfectly stationary).

This is a known issue. It's due to a design/engineering flaw. With use over time all joycons will eventually suffer from it. There was a guy here on reddit that finally broke it all down with pictures and showed exactly why it happens.

You can buy yourself some time by using Electronics cleaner underneath the joystick, but it's a band-aid at best. Thankfully there is a cheap kit that you can buy online (I purchased mine on Amazon) that allows you to replace the joystick, if you are not afraid to open it up yourself. It comes with all the tools you will need.

Please, don't do that. That's the dumbest plan I've ever heard.

At least buy a used one (so that you can give a little less money to the company that sells you faulty hardware) and just fix the controllers yourself. It's CRIMINALLY easy. If you're good with your hands (even being able to use chop sticks is good enough) it'll take 30 minutes MOST. if you're a clumsy person, I'm going to say 4 hours for two controllers is the peak time.

Please please please don't give them 100 extra dollars, plus 80 Everytime they sell you a faulty product. Just think about how that sounds.

If you want I'll even PERSONALLY walk you through the entire repair process for free through twitch or YouTube live. Just anything but your first plan.

15 dollars for parts and tools

Edit: to be clear that's enough to replace 2 controllers thumbsticks.

u/Fishbus · 22 pointsr/Games

The claw was not gentle to the poor PSP.

I swapped my analog sticks twice for the PSP. I swapped the ones for the switch joycons, too. $14 for the pair and 15 minutes of work thanks to iFixit.

Edit: to everyone having problems, this is a really easy fix. Just don't strip any screws, Nintendo's y-screws like to do that.

u/Dexter79 · 12 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

I used these to fix drifting. To me it seemed an easy fix. You can find plenty of videos on YouTube to walk you through it.

Honestly, replacing a joycon joystick isn't that hard. I fully believe that even a total novice could do it. All it requires is a replacement joystick, a YouTube video, and some patience. Not to mention that the replacement joystick is pretty inexpensive.

This was the kit i brought. It came with enough to fix one pair of joycons. After that was a success i ordered another pair just to have extra tools and fix another pair. Better than shelling out for brand new ones that could also drift.

Someone here recommended the Veanics. - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MRJ12HX

They feel almost identical to stock JoyCon sticks, and everything required to make the repair are included.

u/bokochaos · 8 pointsr/Games

I bought this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07MRJ12HX/ref=sspa_mw_detail_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=AKX2DI4Z071IG

It fixed my drift, but doesn't look perfectly OEM on the bottom of the stick housing. I used my coworker's iFixIt kit to do the repairs, so I also cannot tell you the quality of the tools myself...

I watched a lot of videos on the repair, and will do the repair with my second stick for my gf soon since her stick had bad drift last week... best video I saw was Spawn Wave's, which really helped with the dismantle around the battery. There is adhesive on the battery, which threw me for a spin for a moment when I couldn't easily remove the battery to keep getting deeper screws.

The pointy tweezers that come with these have proven extremely useful for fiddly work like this.

u/SSChicken · 6 pointsr/gaming

Mine started drifting as well, but there's joycon stick replacements on amazon that come with all the tools and everything you need to fix two drifting sticks and it's only 15 bucks. I've replaced mine with that exact kit and it was super easy and completely fixed the problem (for now). If it happens again, I've still got the second stick from that kit that I'll swap in again. It's much cheaper than having to buy a second set.

They say they will fix them in warranty now, but when I replaced mine they had said they wouldn't because they were a set I had purchased standalone and they only had like a 90 day warranty.

u/qwertylerqw · 3 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

Yeah, that’s definitely drifting. That’s exactly what mine does

You have a few options. If you’re still coved by warranty you can send it in to Nintendo to be repaired or you can use electrical contact cleaner or compressed air under the flap surrounding the shaft. You can also replace the joystick yourself if you’re comfortable with taking the Joy-Con apart

u/Mostoriginal · 3 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

I’d suggest ordering a new joystick for $15 or less.

I’ve used this in the past. Comes with two joysticks and the tools needed for repair. They look and feel like the original. You can save a few bucks buying an option for just one joystick.

Remember to calibrate after you do the hardware switch. I spent 20 minutes trying to figure out what I screwed up after installation because suddenly the action was drifting DOWN instead of up. Uuugh. Just calibrate.

Sorry to hear bud.
Well you can try the methods suggested here.

Also, DQT is our Daily Question Thread.

I also appreciated not having to wait for weeks for Nintendo to repair my controllers and instead just being able to play at all while waiting a few days for the kit to come in.

u/Seawolfe665 · 2 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

My left Joycon joystick started drifting bad (walking forward even when not touching it). Which kind of makes sense, 90% of playtime is that being pushed forward. I got a joystick replacement kit on Amazon for $14.99 and the swap out was fiddly but easy enough and in 20 minutes it was back to like new and calibrated in just fine. Oh and FWIW I got this controller as backup and I'm actually super impressed with it - I was able to do 3 of the awful BOTW motion control shrines super easy with it.

u/Javzx · 2 pointsr/SmashBrosUltimate

Hey since you mentioned you dismantled it and are comfortable with that, I would look into a replacement analog stick like this

It definitely sucks how fragile the joycon parts are. For your joystick, I'd recommend trying to replace it yourself. I just replaced two of my joycon sticks, saved myself over $50. Link to the kit I used here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MRJ12HX/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_0HFYCbNFC2JTY

u/Corm · 2 pointsr/darksouls

Nintendo will fix that for free: 1 (800) 255-3700

Or buy this for $15. But it's a bit of a pain to install (it's what I did): https://www.amazon.com/Veanic-2-Pack-Replacement-Joystick-Controller/dp/B07MRJ12HX

Mine works great afterwards. Just be aware that the ribbon cables are annoying and get in the way of fat fingers

u/Theenginecouldnt · 2 pointsr/FFXII

This is the link for the set I ordered to repair my left joycon. Keep in mind the NFC reader in the right one. Hope this helps someone.

Replaced the stick tonight, I followed this guide and it was slow but fairly simple.

Take your time with EVERY part of the process and it will work out fine.

I used this Amazon Kit and it is working well after calibration in the switch options (its the gear icon on your home screen)

It's super easy to swap the analog stick. Try the Amazon product.

From my research, it turns out that these replacement thumb switches are universal and used on every major gaming system. So it really doesn’t matter which ones you buy.

One bit of advice, use the triangle screwdriver that comes with them to open the joycon cases but throw the rest out. Buy a quality mini screwdriver set (they’re $5-10). I managed to strip several screws out before I realized that it was the crappy screwdriver’s fault.

To do the actual work I just watched whatever YouTube video that came up. Changing out the thumb switches is fairly straight forward. There’s probably a hundred videos that show you how to do it on YouTube. I think I used this one.

Good luck!

I just bought a joystick replacement on Amazon. I was a little skeptical at first but I said what the hell let’s do it. It costs me around 30$ CAD for two Joysticks and replacing mine took me 15mins tops and went well.
