Any kind of DDR3 Laptop memory will do. If you want it to be as close to the one you're replacing, look for PC3-10600 (the same thing as DDR3 1333).

This stick matches the specs of what you have. It's well rated, about as cheap as you're going to find it right now, and it comes with a lifetime warranty.

No problems, sorry I couldnt find one on Amazon... the closest I got was 690$ for a T420. The other option is to drop back to Core2Duo and get a T400, i know this is isn't a great option, but thinkpads really are bullet proof! They have the high res panel for Cheap on Amazon then with the leftover 175 bucks buy:

  • 4GB RAM making 6GB total
  • 128GB SSD for increased performance
  • Put the 320GB in HD Caddy for movies/music etc

So for ~550$ all off Amazon you can get a pretty nicely specced up new condition T400, which will comfortably perform what you want it too.

EDIT: Also has the 9-cell battery so will run for a good 6-10hrs with power management

So you have a desktop that can handle all of your heavy-duty stuff, to clarify?

Personally, having had a companion computer (for an LD) since middle school, the attribute that served me best was RAM. Lots and lots and lots of tabs. You don't need too much oomph graphically, since you're gonna be playing mostly in-browser games and Minecraft so you can pay attention to lectures at the same time, and you shouldn't need too much storage, since at this point you should be using stuff like Docs to make it harder to lose or leave behind schoolwork, and easier to jump between PCs.

^^^^Be advised that you may do a lot of that. My school made it impossible to print from laptops, so I had a desktop in the dorms, a laptop in class, and then my group and I would use the school computers in the lab. Being able to efficiently bounce info between computers and project members is gonna be key, and I strongly advise moving over to Docs if you haven't already.

My advice is get a cheap laptop with 4 gigs of RAM and a big enough drive for your music and whatever you won't be storing on the cloud. Like, 250$. This sort of thing:

http://www.staples.com/Dell-i3552-3240BLK-15-6-Intel-Pentium-N3700-1-6GHz-Processor-4-GB-RAM-500-GB-HDD-Windows-10-Black-Notebook/product_2256788

and then either go to friends who might have dead laptops, or Amazon, and grab one of these:

https://www.amazon.com/Corsair-1x4GB-10666-Laptop-Memory/dp/B002YU83YO?th=1

and stick it in the second RAM slot. If you want, you can get 2 8G sticks for around 60$; you can almost certainly get the second 4G stick free from someone who's computer broke - I have around a dozen of the damn things lying around. RAM is cheap.

Then, if you want to go whole hog and are primarily storing stuff on the cloud, you could grab a SSD and stick it in in place of your HD. For an extra 10$, you could grab an enclosure and turn that HD into a external, too. Your school almost certainly has a "Free OS" deal set up with Microsoft - or at least, all the ones around here do - so that's easy and free. You could probably do both this and the RAM to a new laptop for ~400$ - 250 for the laptop, 120 for the SSD and enclosure, and 30~ for the RAM.

To give you an idea, my current laptop is a Toshiba Satellite C655D. I got it from my grandmother when my laptop died - bought in 2012, it came with 3GB of RAM and sucked. Upgraded it to 2x 4GB sticks and now it's great - it used to not be able to handle Skype and open browsers, and now I've got three pages of 33ish tabs each open and it's running fine.

DDR3 4GB X 1 for your PS2?

Pretty sure it was this one.

Both were ddr3 1333mhz so I thought they would work. I've tried taking out each one and testing but kind a hard to tell since the lag starts an hour or more from restart but gets worse fast.

Thanks for the input. I wasn't able to get that system as the guy sold it already.

I'm just thinking about building my own instead of getting a used one. Is a combo motherboard/cpu good or should I buy them separately (will raise cost by maybe $100).

What do you think about the following? I'm open to suggestions (probably will build in couple of weeks).
