There has been a lot of different Venom series, and not a lot of them are really well-regarded. My personal recommendation would actually be the recent 2018 series by Donny Cates. It's pretty accessible for new readers, and takes a deep dive into the mythos behind the symbiote. The first collected volume comes out in December. If you want to read digital single issues, you can buy them off Comixology (a digital store), but they'll be a bit expensive.

Another popular but unconventional pick is Venom Collection by Rick Remender, in which a crippled Flash Thompson bonds with the symbiote and becomes an agent of the government.

If you're looking for the original versions of the Venom stories you see in movies or cartoons, that'll be a bit trickier, since adaptations often consolidate and prune long-running storylines that sometimes have too many crossovers and a lot of outdated 80s writing. You can try asking /r/comicbooks for more information. Also, if you have a library card, I highly recommend making an account on Hoopla Digital. You'll be able to borrow old digital comics on there.

You can read Birth of Venom, with Peter with the black suit and the earliest Venom stuff.

Vengeance of Venom comes next. Standard Venom wants to kill Spider-Man, but features the creation of Carnage.

Next Venom becomes his own character and has a bunch of short solo series. It's collected in the pricey Venomnibus .

Then after those stories is Venom: Along Came a Spider. Venom fights Peter's clone.

Finally comes Flash Thompson as Venom. Rick Remender, then Cullen Bunn.

>Also, what was your last out of the ordinary purchase, excluding the puppy.

I bought the two compilation books of Venom recently because the symbiotes are my favorite part of the Marvel universe. But I became disappointed because the writing if fucking SHIT.

Where are you seeing mixed reviews? Amazon and Goodreads are pretty positive.

Some of those Spider-Man issues are from the 1980s which still had a specific writing/art style that may be an acquired taste for some. You'll have to define "comprehensive" in this context. It definitely shows you how Peter Parker brings back a symbiote with him in Secret War (II), fighting crime in the black spider suit, gets help from the Fantastic Four about his suit, in comes Eddie Brock, etc. It's all the early days of Venom. Eventually, there will be other hosts and other characterizations.

This is what I'd recommend for Venom:

Marvel is going to be releasing the entire series in oversized paperbacks starting this summer. The first volume comes out on June 16th, with the second volume to follow in August.
