Perhaps not the best way to do it, but here's my idea.

Software that allowed you to swap your mouse and keyboard easily : https://symless.com/synergy

Then for display this device which will let you swap between the two inputs at a push of a button.

KCOOL 2 Port Bi-direction HDMI Switch 2 in 1 out or HDMI Splitter 1 in 2 out, Best AB Switch supports HDMI 2.0, 4K Ultra HD, 1080P, 3D https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071YVCJ32/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_p.stzb72Y0JQQ

Then an adapter for changing the VGA to HDMI since you're changing from analog to digital.

Might be better, cheaper ways. However, this would work.

Since VGA is Analog and DP is Digital, you usually need a powered adapter. Also, all the adapters I've found have been DP to VGA, not the other way around. When dealing with VGA the direction is important. I think you could possibly do it with a VGA to HDMI adapter.

Followed by a HDMI to Displayport cable.

The best route might be a Dreamcast to HDMI adapter

followed by a female HDMI to Displayport.

It's certainly possible, but it'll be a bit more work than I think you envisioned.

Edit - P.S. Be sure that the Displayport on your iMac is a displayport in and not a displayport out.

P.P.S. It seems the Female HDMI to Displayport might be one direction as well, DP-->HDMI

Is there a HDMI plug in on your laptop? If not it might need something like this link here

Well, i've considered chaining them... like using a typical wireless HDMI like this one

https://www.amazon.com/Nyrius-Transmitter-Streaming-Projector-NPCS549/dp/B009E6R89C

and them plugging other things into it...

What I'm unsure of is if this kind of daisy-chaining will cause an issue. We're not looking for perfect image clarity here, really just get it up there. SIMPLY --- that's the key.

*Edit: I hope amazon links are OK... not an endorsement, just examples!

This and this.

You probably can find a cheaper Box Set too that has an 3.5mm Audio Aux-in too on Amazon without that Wireless/Bluetooth Stuff. Same goes with the Adaptercable so your overall cost could be somewhere close to 20$ ~ 25$.

That would be great if that was the reason but I don't think so, I actually bought it off of Amazon I'll link it for you. VicTsing VGA To HDMI Output 1080P HD Audio TV AV HDTV Video Cable Converter Adapter https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00K4W62R4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apap_kRMnGUPw7tPA4

P.s. sorry for the huge links

Your best bet then is something like this:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00K4W62R4?psc=1

A VGA to HDMI adapter is probably what you need :)

u/RuneBoot · 1 pointr/AskBattlestations

If i got this adapter would i get the better hdmi quality over just connecting directly with vga?

u/rockydbull · 1 pointr/htpc

Could also try something like this https://www.amazon.com/VicTsing-Output-1080P-Converter-Adapter/dp/B00K4W62R4/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1475180221&sr=1-3&keywords=vga+and+audio+to+hdmi

with a mini dvi to vga. Not sure if stepping from Mini-dvi to vga to hdmi would cause signal degredation. Converter box seems pretty expensive and considering the power of the old macbook you could throw a few more bucks than a converter box at the problem and get a nuc/compute stick.
