I bought this:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B078P2XN9M/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It is 144hz and performs as well as any $1000+ name-brand monitor I have ever used. I highly recommend.

getting rid of the cpu cooler(already suggested I know) and getting an ssd will be a great benefit if you can afford it later although good ssd's at 45 bucks are small so i'd stay with the hdd for now. for a monitor in that price range i'd recommend the Lg ultragear or the Viotek gn24cb

I suggest getting a 1080p monitor for him as the hardware required to run games at 1440p 144Hz simply won't be that easy with a budget of $550

You can get this monitor for him and couple that with this build that i put together

For that price its gonna have to be VA. VA is a little iffy for gaming, so are you ok with that?

If so: this

This is at the very top of your budget, but its ips here

Check it out. Technically it’s a 24” but I love this thing. I got one of the 144 hz and one of the 75hz. I would recommend either one. They also have a 27” but I’m not sure how expensive that one is.

Depends how much you want it, haha. You could get this one for $140

Hardware Unboxed did a review of this monitor, and it had a pretty low response time compared to advertised. A better option would be this Viotek (according to their results): https://www.amazon.com/Viotek-GN24CB-Speakers-Bezel-Less-FreeSync/dp/B078P2XN9M/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=viotek+144hz&qid=1574722037&refinements=p_n_size_browse-bin%3A3547806011&rnid=2633086011&s=pc&sr=1-1

That AOC monitor also has the strobing backlight and some smearing that might not be great for competitive games

Depends on your budget. If youre willing to pay upwards of 700-800 dollars for an ASUS ROG monitor, then those are great. If not, I bought this monitor for about 200 USD and it's pretty good for the price. Although it's a TN panel, its comparable to my IPS monitor (I'm not a content creator so the small difference doesn't affect me)

Hardware Unboxed's recommendation for budget 1080P was the Viotek GN24CB currently $180, (this is HU's affiliate link). Here's the youtube version of the list, the text version is on techspot.

I don’t know if this is that good of a deal but this is the one I’m gonna get.

Is this monitor (https://www.amazon.com/d/Monitors/Viotek-GN24CB-Speakers-Bezel-Less-FreeSync/B078P2XN9M) good for its price, and what are its flaws, and what is a good alternative if so?

Since you linked 24" 1080p monitors I'll assume that's what you want. In that case, this TN panel monitor is the one you want for adaptive sync/freesync (and it's cheaper than the non-freesync monitor you linked, even). If you want a VA panel instead of TN for better color (and are willing to sacrifice response times) this one is also an option.

Note that Nvidia GPUs from the 10 series and later now support freesync, so there's no reason to pay the ~$200 gsync module "tax" anymore.

Also, if your PC is good enough to get more than 144 fps you'll want to get RTSS (optionally with MSI Afterburner) and limit the framerate to 135-140 in order to keep freesync active (adaptive sync currently doesn't work if your FPS goes above your monitor's refresh rate).

Edit: Oops, fixed the links.

I'm putting together a 1080p 144hz build for a friend, why get this over something like the Viotek monitor with the same specs (1080p 144hz VA) for cheaper? My friend wants a smaller monitor (so 27" would be a minus here) and doesn't care for curvature or RGB. The only upsides I can see are 165hz vs 144hz (she'll be using a 1070 so it's doubtful she'd be going over 144 fps anyways) and g-sync (irrelevant since Nvidia GPU's support freesync now anyways). So what's the point? Just for show?

Found this one, only thing I don't care for is the built in speakers. But there should be an option to disable them.

And I found this one also, but it's a little over the budget

I bought one of these because I wanted a 144Hz screen that wasn't a TN panel and I love it. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B078P2XN9M/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_6kXCCbJVTRQWW
