Sounds like you need to use the tamper. Maybe since you found the Vitamix in the trash room you don't have one? You can get one for ~$12 from Amazon or Vitamix.com. Assuming your blender has the container it came with (tall/narrow 64-oz, looks like the one in this subreddit's picture), this is the one you want: http://www.amazon.com/Vitamix-760-Accelerator-Tamper-Tool/dp/B0028Y4CV4

Also, loading order can minimize need for the tamper. Try to add liquids and soft items first and hard/frozen ingredients last.

One other thing you can do to make sure everything is in order is to do a quick test run without the container. Make sure nothing is touching the drive socket(!) and then ramp up the speed and make sure it speeds up properly.
