I did something similar, but used vesa mount laptop holders as shelves. I then used the arm sections from 2 of these to get the length I needed to make it around my ultrawide. The monitor is on its own separate single arm. Has a little shake if you smack the desk hard, but having LSR308's floating in your face is pretty sweet.

Tha Laptop sits on this. And a vesa mount. For the Vesa you need one where you can flip the head back nearly 90° (till it's nearly horizontal)

Could something like this work? https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00Z1VBIE0

I can't tell from the pics alone, but it looks like he has the dual arms where one arm is a standard VESA and the other arm is just a laptop 'stand'.

If not, then there are plenty of VESA -> laptop stand products available.

A dual VESA mount, then a VESA laptop cradle so you can mount the laptop to it.

It would give you back a ton of real estate, make it cleaner, and make everything more adjustable.

But by the time you add the vesa laptop tray for $19, you've got $50 tied up in it, lol.
