My brother wears the boots I linked. They are pretty much barefoot style though. They are like wearing the Vibram 5 finger shoes.

I have not found the unaggressive tread to be a problem. I hunt mostly in the Mojave, covering some pretty good mileage. Haven't fallen or had any problems. They seem to be water proof, and are cholla cactus proof as well.
