Can't find anything that's worth listing in here. The top most suggestion from amazon is a Samsung SD card at 700. It feels as though someone increased the prices and then decreased it to show discount. Is there any price tracker?

Edit: Headphones have seen them from ages, decent and is more than enough for the average bloke.

For old age, because come old age the prices will increase.

Great bluetooth speakers, I got them at 1700 back in the day, but it seems that's the lowest it will go now.

I was doing pretty good until I got to the damn WD hard drives. I suspect I paid way too much for how good they are. Probably could have saved some money by making an enclosure and using real hard drives or something

At this point in the generation, if you're looking to get your own, and not break the bank, just get an S.

As for external storage, I can't recommend any Western Digital drive highly enough. I've never had a problem with one. I've got the 4tb version of this one and it's been great:

Here is the one I got for my brother and I. Working for over a year now without issue. Used for a few hours a day, fiveish days a week.

Worked great. I can barely notice the load time differences.

u/kjm16 · 2 pointsr/blackmagicdesign

I use a cheap external drive for editing and current project files. I usually don't do "generate optimized media" unless it's really slowing me down because the process takes a long time itself and you can't do anything while it's rendering. I use prores proxy at half resolution to save space since it's just for editing.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06W55K9N6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o09_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Then I backup the editing drive, when I remember to, to a larger storage drive so I at least have that in case the portable one craps.

u/_TheMeepMaster_ · 2 pointsr/Games

I'd personally recommend this one instead. Personal preference though. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06W55K9N6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The promo deal is out of stock now.

For future reference what is the difference between reds and blues? Is it just the reliability and warranty?

Do you know if this will be the same as this elements external drive from amazon? I can't tell if there is any difference between their warranties. I'm also considering the my book drive and internal hdds with an external enclosure but I'm not sure what would be most reliable from a price stand point.

u/RedOctobyr · 2 pointsr/PS4

I got this one, for my Pro:
https://www.amazon.com/Elements-Portable-External-Drive-WDBU6Y0020BBK-WESN/dp/B06W55K9N6/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?ie=UTF8

2TB, I paid $60 at Newegg. It's a laptop-size drive, like the internal one in the PS4. That makes it a little slower than a desktop-size drive. But I haven't noticed things seeming slower when running off the external drive.

But it's USB powered. I liked that, since it helped ensure that it wouldn't just keep running needlessly when the PS4 was in Rest mode.

The desktop-size external drives with their own power supplies might also spin down when in Rest mode, I'm not sure.

My internal drive is 1TB. I filled that surprisingly quickly. But I figured that adding an additional 2TB would give me plenty of room for games. So I saved a bit on price by skipping the 3TB or 4TB.

u/legos45 · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

You can easily get an external hard drive like this 2 TB external drive. Apparently, there is an open NVMe SSD slot if you want to add another SSD.

u/Davedamon · 2 pointsr/xboxone

I mean, what's your budget? You can get a 2tb external drive for $60 which isn't far off the price of an internal drive.

u/Trey5169 · 2 pointsr/computers

Ah, so you do have a laptop. Yeah... you'd have to copy all the data over from your old drive to your new drive, if you were to get a larger internal drive. Definitely possible, but not always easy.

You may want to ask a local store how much they'll charge to move the data over to your new disk. If they do it for free, it's a great value, though I doubt they'll do it for free due to the small price difference I found online.

A 2TB external disk from seagate: here. - $64

A 1TB internal disk (half the space!): here - $66.

2 TB WD black drive: here - $65

... So apparently an external disk is cheaper. Go for it!

Edit: Also, most laptops don't have the storage space for an additional drive. That's why I keep mentioning "desktop" - desktops have a ton of storage space.

You may want to google your laptop, and the query "m.2 SSD?" because some laptops have a m.2 slot on the motherboard. Spending the $100 on a internal M.2 and an additional $60 on an internal HDD would be great, though you'd have to be comfortable with moving the OS to the new M.2.

Also, I added a WD black external HDD above, same price as the seagate.

> Get all your important papers together. Keep them with you. Birth certificate, drivers licences, etc..

In addition to physical items, also try to get a copy of any digital items such as digital photos and such. Get something like this portable hard drive.

These are obviously not as important as the papers /u/Zenock43 mentioned, but loosing memories can be a heart breaker.

u/sivartk · 2 pointsr/PleX

If you already have it running on a PC that is on 24/7 and it isn't hindering your day-to-day usage of that PC, just find you an IDE to USB adapter and plug in the 250GB HDD that you have and use that. However, it being IDE tells me that it is very old so make sure you either have a backup or don't mind losing the data when the drive fails.

I'd personally just shop for a nice 2-4TB drive in an external enclosure and start there. You can always upgrade or add more drives later.

u/niosurfer · 2 pointsr/TeslaModel3

Would that one work too? It is 1/3 of the price: https://www.amazon.com/Elements-Portable-External-Drive-WDBU6Y0020BBK-WESN-x/dp/B06W55K9N6/

Besides the size, in what sense the Samsung would be better?

u/wallybeavis · 1 pointr/cordcutters

If it's the same box that I have, it may be this one:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00I2ZBD1U/

You can connect a external drive for recording shows. I use this one, first on the Homworx and later on my Tablo

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06W55K9N6/

I only see what's playing and what's next in the guide. The guide also relies on the local tv stations to populate the descriptions of their shows, and some stations just don't. It's not a bad box for $40, but I missed being able to pause the news/shows while I'm watching, which is why I ended up with a Tablo.

Also, I don't know who needs to see this, but it save my 14 year old 42" Plasma from the recycling yard:
https://www.walmart.com/ip/Roku-Express-HD-1080p-Streaming-Media-Player-3910RW/369278616

For some reason it was cheaper on line by $5, than in store

u/KhaosKat · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

I use WD Elements portables. They're fast enough and run off USB power. They're also small enough that I can store a bunch of them in a small fire proof safe.

u/Rethread · 1 pointr/linuxmint

Learn to back up your data, do that before all else. Forget about windows, linux, apple - back up your data first and always.

$55 2 Terrabyte external drive.

By data, I mean your home folder (music, resume, research, pics, family photos etc.), your bookmarks, and your logins. Once you know all your stuff is safe...

THEN, you play. You can wreck it, install dual boot, screw up Windows, blow out Linux and you can learn to rebuild it from the ground up and never lose anything truly important.

So, dual boot, no sweat - never had any significant problems myself. Windows can't see anything from Linux - data or otherwise without jumping through hoops. Linux can see Windows files data and otherwise. Virtual operating systems can be fun for later, removing Windows or removing Linux from the dual boot can be done without a ton of effort (I've done both). A dual boot in any configuration generally won't screw itself up, you may inadvertently do something that will. When your data is backed up off the machine, that's not a problem. You will learn more and faster when you're not worried about losing your data - like you are right now.

Remove doubt, back up your data, and play hard :)

I'd suggest getting an external drive, they're not expensive e.g) https://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-Elements-Portable-External/dp/B06W55K9N6 - I have the 4TB one and don't ever worry about games taking up too much space.

I'm looking for a decently priced 2TBish external HDD exclusively for backup. I'm running exclusively SSDs in my computer, which is fine. I should have a few more years in them but I want to have everything backed up.

Would appreciate any help, I keep getting mixed reports on amazon.

This one looks good with 3300 reviews at 4.5 stars, but at a glance I see a guy saying that it doesn't work with windows backup: https://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-Elements-Portable-External/dp/B06W55K9N6/ref=cm_cr_srp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8

Sure! They are both external HDs in an enclosure. The old one is a Seagate Expansion Portable (STEA1000400), the new one is a Western Digital Elements (WDBU6Y0020BBK).

Thanks for the help thus far!

u/Eric_Style · 1 pointr/raspberry_pi

hello, i just ordered a canakit starter pack with the intention of setting up something like this.

i have a few questions about setting it up to do what i want:

  • will the pi's usb 2.0 port be able to reliably power this external drive?

i read something about pi's usb ports being able to pull power from both through 1 port, and amazon says the drive is compatible with usb 2.0. but i want to make sure because there doesn't look like there's a seperate power input on the thing.

  • can i use openelec on the pi for the media center functionality, and still be able to access the deluge browser interface remotely 24/7?

ideally, i want to use the pi as a 24/7 seedbox, media center, and network storage all at the same time. is this possible within the hardware limitations of the 3B+? if so, can someone please explain to me the basic steps to take for this, or link me to a good resource?

I had a Seagate 2 TB for a good 2 years till I dropped it off my desk and rendered it inoperable.

Now I have a Western Digital 2 TB.

Both are great. No problems really. Just go to amazon and search external hard drive.

  1. Backup hdd C:\users\username* (-AppData) to an external drive

  2. Take note of windows key

  3. Wipe pc

  4. Change hdd for cheap 500gb ssd, canned air everywhere - clean those 10 years of dust

  5. Install fresh copy of windows 10 on said ssd

  6. Check if you need to activate win10 with former key, copy files from external drive

  7. Charge them for the hw cost + 30$/hr spent (usually finish within 1hr)

  8. Become wizard

u/yboris · -1 pointsr/homelab

Sorry I might not be using the terms correctly. I will not have the files on the original PC -- they will be on the external storage system I'm hoping to build. When you suggested "a USB 3.0 External Hard Drive" I thought you meant something like this: Amazon: USB 3.0 External Hard Drive. I currently have a few external hard drives, but if any one of them fails, I lose the data that's stored on it irreversibly.
