Yes 4TB WD My Book. Got it over a year ago when it was on sale for $69. Never had an issue and don't notice it at all. Once set up is complete, it just works.

I can't find any info on this on Western Digital's website. Is there a place that lists the OEM drive inside of different external enclosures? I realize that a manufacturer like Western Digital might put different OEM drives (Hitachi/WD) into the same enclosure as long as the specs are the same. But still, it would be nice to have somewhere to check to see what you're getting inside that plastic.

Edit: finally found a phrase that gave me what I wanted on Google. "what drive is inside wd my book" was it.

That's crazy to me. That means that the $130 4TB WD My book might have a $128 5400 RPM Drive or potentially a $200 7200 RPM Drive.

They only guarantee capacity? That's crazy to me. I assume they do this so that when they buy another manufacturer's stuff like they did with Hitachi, they can get rid of old stock without having to worry about matching specs. That's honestly great news as long as they're selling the External at about the same price as their cheapest OEM drive. Some lucky guy is getting free random upgrades.

Probably the best bet is filling up a 4TB mybook.

I have no complaints on it. Choose your TB size on the page if you wish. I have linked the 4TB model. Its $148.22. 7200 RPM. USB 3.0, 3.5 inch hard drive size.

There's no real good summary in the comments here, and I just looked into all of this since I'm in the same situation.

Nintendo recommends you use an externally powered hard drive, like this. The single USB port doesn't have enough power to use a more portable hard drive, like this, unless you have a Y-cable, like this. The Y-cable provides enough power to the hard drive for proper operation since there are two usb ports. The problem is that Y-cables can be hard to find locally, and you almost always have to order them online. Mine is taking 3 weeks to get here.

Flash drives can also be used, but Nintendo says that the constant writing and re-writing that occurs on the drive as a result of gameplay can eventually corrupt what is on the flash drive, possibly deleting data and save files. Of course, it's up to you what you do, but the general consensus is that externally powered hard drives are the most reliable way to go.

I highly recommend it. Its what Im rolling with. Digital games also load slightly faster.

That all depends on how much spare you're wanting. If you want to get an enclosure hard-drive you could buy one of these and put thousands of GB together, and have a couple hard drives going to your Xbox One (this also depends on how big your Xbox One library is)

or you could just buy a my book drive I currently use one of these myself on my Xbox One and love it.

I personally think 4TB hard drive is more than plenty for the first few years of Xbox One gaming.

Another thing to take into consideration would be do you plan on doing mostly exclusives and a few games for Xbox One? then 2TB would be perfect. But if you plan on having all of your games on an Xbox One I'd highly suggest getting a 4TB hdd. I myself have almost 20 Xbox One games worth nearly 1TB in storage and its very handy to have.

Just recently are you getting some 3.5 external hds that can be powered only from usb. Alot of models will not function without an external power source, doesn't matter if its plugged into a 2.0 or 3.0 usb port.

Unlike 2.5 inch drives that typically have a integrated pcb, most 3.5 internals are just internal 3.5 drives in an enclosure, and they just use a power brick to power them.

Definitely the best deal here. One thing you definitely need to understand is that this is only going to be a 500GB system which really isn't enough space for most xbox one players. If you're only going to play halo on it, then that is perfect for you. If you know you're going to buy more games, then you need to start looking at external hard drives (EHD) that will work with your xbox. I have this one. Works great, quiet, no problems. I went 4TB because there's no reason not to. You're gonna fill up a 1 or 2TB faster than you think as game files get bigger and bigger, BC ramps up, GWG continues at 4 games per month, etc.

An SSD is not recommended for video editing because editing can wear out the drives. It does work, however, and it's fast.

USB 3.0 is fast enough in theory, but you should get one with a fast hard drive in it. The non powered versions that are small like this one, I find sluggish at times. The larger powered ones, like this, should work just fine.

Thunderbolt is by far the fastest and most expensive option. You will literally pay double or more for identical sized drives. With a proper RAID setup, however, you can get several times the speed.

I've done HD editing off of plug in FW800 drives as well without any real issues. Unless you're working with 4K or RAW video, you should be okay with most consumer plug in USB 3 and FW800 drives.

I'll recommend exactly what I got: ThinkServer TS140 with a Xeon E3. Now, that may seem a bit overkill, but for us it's been absolutely perfect doing:

• HTPC (via VLC for one-off videos, Plex for Home Theater, Netflix Windows 8.1 app, YouTube in Chrome, etc.)

  But the most important feature: It's dead silent. I mean really, with absolutely nothing else on in the room, I have to get within three feet to barely hear the CPU's fan even when it's ramped up to 100% on all four cores at 3.6 GHz, transcoding new Blu-ray remuxes to generate media index files, thrashing a few dozen torrents, and Steam hammering the bandwidth downloading games to the SSD.

Dang, you just missed out on some good external HDD deals. I picked up this 4TB Western Digital MyBook for $100. If you don't care about the space factor, or having to have a separate power connection, I think the MyBook's will probably be your best bet as far as $/TB.

In general, I personally think the brands are a wash. There will be complaints about certain manufacturers from everyone, but in general, you're looking for best price per TB. I'll keep my eye out and send you links if I find any good deals in the next few weeks.

Just did this with a WD 4tb external and installed it in my TS440. It was a WD Green drive, but still much more reliable than connected via USB

I personally edit of the internal fusion drive in my 2012 iMac and store footage and personal stuff on a 5TB desktop hard drive (almost full).

Hind-sight 20-20, I would have preferred to get a larger raid array for my desk, something on the order of 20TB. Then also have a 500GB or bigger external SDD for fast editing of my current 1 or 2 projects. And then also a 2-4TB external hard drive for on-site backup and transporting large files. I don't know how I would like that setup, but from those that have some of the components, it seems like it would be a great setup. I would then reserve my computer hard drive for personal stuff.

Get this external storage instead, because seagate has higher failure rates as proven in the past.

Idealy you would want an Internal HDD, but for some reason your friend has everything on USB.

If you would like to use internal HDDs (and get wayyyy faster transfer speeds) but have no space left you can buy this or this or any other one you would like and then you just plug it into an eSATA port or USB. If you have an internal SATA available you can buy this and have a nice place to plug it in, or just buy long eSATA to SATA cable and shove it through a slot.

Note: To protect your data you need to put more money into it, currently you have 0 data protection.

4 terabytes total (maybe closer to like 3.8 of usable space). I have 78 games of varying quality and size saved on it and I've only used 30% of the space. If you get Xbox Live, you get two free games a month and those add up the Gigs fast. I usually buy and download the free games onto the hard drive. I can access them seamlessly from the "My Games and Apps" tab and save things to it without any extra steps.

I think I got it on sale for under $100 last year but the current price ($130) is still great for the quality and size.

I've been having this issue as well. I figured it was an issue with Assassin's Creed Unity crashing but apparently it's not(?).

I'm using a 4 TB Western Digital HD which was working fine up until a few days ago, probably around the same time the February preview came out.

Don't worry about getting an external drive listed "For Mac" though- you can format a "regular" one and it will work fine.

You can always go bigger.

And you can always go fancier.

If you are concerned about space, i would not go for a smaller SSD but for a bigger HDD instead. Anything with 4TB or more should do the Job for you as Long as it is USB 3.0. I personally use a 4 TB my book.

If you want to take the time to learn how to do it you can hook up one of these to your television with an external hard drive (first one I found) while running ubuntu. While it would take a bit of skill to set up it would also run you under 300 dollars.

I've been entertaining this idea myself after I read about someone making a dedicated torrentbox with a RasberryPi.

EDIT: This is only going to consume somewhere around 5-10$ of electricity per year whereas a home server would be running closer to 200+. Another thing to consider.

Storage is extremely cheap these days.

Divide that by the number of possible 100 gb parts (42), you get $3.78 for the cost per person, Which means it would take around 2 months to make up for the costs. And that's if a layperson buys a hard drive with a case and everything. I'm sure it's a lot cheaper per TB for google to do it.

Get an external hard drive to plug into the xbox for games then get a NAS for movies and other media. Thats what im going to be doing when they expand the dlna functions.
