> I have a surface and am scared of putting the tablet in a laptop compartment and then filling the bag and bending the keyboard.

Serious comment, not intended as an asshole jab or a personal attack:

If you are so scared of hurting your most critical and essential tool of your profession then you have chosen the wrong tool.

Put a T470p in there and stop worrying about it.

I use one of these everyday when I am in the office:

No, just a regular backpack. Synergy by Swissgear.

Though I do have a couple straps that I use to secure the pack to rear seat. Basically I take the seat off, put the backpack on the seat like it's wearing it, put the seat back on the bike, then strap the pack down so it doesn't wiggle around. Putting the pack on the seat so it's wearing it keeps the packs shoulder straps locked underneath the seat, so if for some reason the extra straps I have fail or come loose the pack won't fall off until the rear seat is removed. Works pretty well for me.

I've had this backpack (wenger) for probably 10 years, using it a minimum of 5 days a week. Highly recommend. Happy to see it doesn't seem like they've changed a thing.

I use the Timbuk2 Commute (Med) for everyday/work use and the SwissGear Synergy when I need to take more crap or am travelling. I like them both.

I've had this Swiss Gear backpack for >4 years now and it has help up better than any I've ever had. http://www.amazon.com/Wenger-GA-7305-14F00-SwissGear-Computer-Backpack/dp/B000NONHYY

I've fit mine into one of these: http://www.amazon.com/Wenger-GA-7305-14F00-SwissGear-Computer-Backpack/dp/B000NONHYY

Edit: Not with the box, obviously.

I have found one of the few perks to being in management is no more functioning like a pack mule when traveling.

With that being said the bag linked below has lasted me 38 states and 6 countries of IT M&A work. Problem is you now see it everywhere but it is one of the most durable bags I have owned. Stood up to regularly carrying multiple laptops, networking gear, cables, tools and anything else I needed "in a pinch".

This is the one I have it has been really good. Plus all swiss gear stuff is under lifetime warranty so if it ever breaks from anything other then you actively choosing to destroy it you can get a new one from them.

I use this:

Wenger Synergy Backpack, Gray (GA-7305-14F00) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000NONHYY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_dsG5BbC6N7FMJ

Is has a padded compartment for your laptop. The middle compartment is perfect for a headset and ipad. There is a small padded zipper pocket ontop that will hold a stratus. It has these tall zipper side pockets that run basically the full height of the bag which are great for a fuel strainer, ipad mount, and a couple of screwdrivers. It also great organization for the little stuff. It is very rugged. I've had mine about 3 years and it still works perfectly. Highly recommend.

I'm on a leather kick right now, this bag will last you a lifetime, probably at least. It's pricey though, so probably not what you're looking for. Also the fact that it uses straps makes it a bit more of an effort to open up, so your desire for speedy laptop access might be affected. http://www.saddlebackleather.com/frontpocketbackpack

I used this Swiss Gear backpack my last years in college and it has held up well in the near 10 years after. Much more realistically priced for a college student. http://smile.amazon.com/Wenger-GA-7305-14F00-SwissGear-Computer-Backpack/dp/B000NONHYY/ref=sr_1_19?ie=UTF8&qid=1426605222&sr=8-19&keywords=swiss+gear+backpack

Plus they have a bunch of different models you can choose from.

Literally every kid on my campus carried this backpack. I think the brand is super good. :)

This is the backpack I have, and it's great! Lots of compartments. Well thought out in how it's organized too: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Swissgear-GA-7305-14F00-Synergy-15-6-Laptop-x/dp/B000NONHYY

If you're really paranoid about your laptop getting damaged, the Ogio Renegade RSS has a dedicated laptop compartment that is heavily padded and suspended off the ground (pricey though)

At first glance it looks like a Swiss Gear backpack, but the logo looks stickyoutier on his. So it's possibly this one.

Or maybe an older Swiss Gear backpack? Unfortunately I'm not a backpackoligist, I'm just an enthusiast.

I've had one of these for 7+ years, still really happy with it.

Swiss gear synergy, this model specifically.
My husband just got this to replace the identical one he had for over ten years. His first one is still in good shape but his job offered to buy him a brand new one for his new work laptop, so yes please!
The pockets on this thing are amazing. I want one! Top pocket, little front pocket, medium front pocket, maybe pocket, best laptop sleeve I've seen in any backpack, side pockets... I really like lots of pockets as opposed to two big ones and a small one like most backpacks lately.
Before he got this, i would have said Columbia, I've had my Columbia backpack for 15 years, but this one is slightly cooler than mine. :)

SwissGear makes some good backpacks. I have a backpack similar to this one and has lasted ~8yrs.

If you aren't taking it on a plane, I use my Wenger Backpack. It has a stabilizing section that expands so the xbox has solid cushion and isn't smashed in. Kind of like this one: http://www.amazon.com/Wenger-Synergy-Backpack-Gray-GA-7305-14F00/dp/B000NONHYY

Check out xoticpc.com for a good variety of gaming laptops. 17" laptops get pretty heavy.. even 15.6" is quite a load - might want to consider getting something smaller instead of lugging it around to class all day. If you really want a bigger screen it might be worth it to buy a 22" or 24" monitor for $130-ish and keep it in your dorm/apartment and carry something more portable.

Also invest in a good laptop backpack. My backpack is easily 15 lbs with all the crap I carry and I can barely feel it.

http://www.amazon.com/Wenger-GA-7305-14F00-SwissGear-Computer-Backpack/dp/B000NONHYY Has treated me well. I got mine back in 2008, and it still looks practically new. It's gone through grad school in a major city (and all the public transportation that entails), vacations, and general duty as my daily messenger bag to/from work. The laptop sleeve is well-padded, the material feels heavy and secure, and it looks decent too.

I used to have one of these. I got no complaints about it.
