For one thing, it dates Christ - it sets his story in real history.

Here are a few paragraphs from What Christians Believe:

He Suffered Under Pontius Pilate

Other than Jesus himself, and his mother the Virgin Mary, no one else is named in the creeds except the Roman governor Pontius Pilate. By mentioning his name, the creeds firmly connect the story of our salvation (and the salvation of the world) to datable time and history.

Pontius Pilate was the Roman Procurator of Judea from A.D. 26 to 36. For ten years he was involved in all the political intrigue associated with the Roman Empire, and he showed himself to be the kind of politician that gives politicians a bad name - more concerned with expediency than justice or honesty.

The odd thing is that Pilate absolved himself of the whole matter of Jesus’ crucifixion. Giving in to the desires of the religious/political leaders of the day, he allowed Jesus to be beaten and mocked, but his intention was not to have him crucified. After questioning Jesus and finding no fault in him, instead of standing up for him, Pilate simply walked away from the whole matter: “When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. ‘I am innocent of this man’s blood,’ he said. ‘It is your responsibility!’” (Matthew 27.24). Sadly, this action not only made way for the death of Jesus, but it forever earned infamy for Pilate, who would henceforth be remembered as a coward more concerned with his own popularity than with justice.
