Jo Boaler has also done some interesting (contemporary) work on math education. I find her books (like What's Math Got to Do With It?) really reader friendly, but they also give a good overview of some of the issues prevalent in the field and her take on them based on her research.

I think if you gave your background, at least subject area and grade level, you'd get better suggestions. The best education book I've ever read was What's Math Got to Do with It? by Jo Boaler. But that's because I'm a high school math teacher in an affluent district whose biggest problems are students' fixed mindset and making math come to life for them.
