I'm fairly certain that both "Honor" and "dignity" cultures are well-accepted ideas at least among some academics. Personally I first heard of honor culture in the context of violence in the American south, dignity culture has existed for awhile but only started needing a name when there is some alternative (ie honor) because for many academics it was just taken for granted. For a more pro-"honor" view, see Why honor matters.

"Victimhood culture" is really the outlier here; the term was invented a few years ago by Campbell and Manning. I am also interested in others thoughts, presumably part of the reason there hasn't been much scholarship on it is that it's so very very new, both as a description and as an actual phenomenon (Campbell and Manning identify it as happening among subpopulations of very liberal universities starting around 2014).

> shame <...> is a natural human response.

I think this has been lost. There is shame and there is guilt. There is shame that motivates you and there is shame that crushes you.

But all shame is now in the same category and nobody should feel ever feel shame(d), so we've lost something that keeps us safer and happier if used correctly.

This book about honor, shame, guilt, justice, violence, etc. was a great read. Opened my eyes to how much of my emotional life had been "don't you dare tell me I'm anything less in any way."

Wow! No one has mentioned premier honor philosopher Tamler Sommers! He wrote a book called why honor matters https://www.amazon.com/Why-Honor-Matters-Tamler-Sommers/dp/0465098878

His mom Christina hoff sommers is an IDW member and I’ve always thought tamler should be a member as well. He has a great podcast on moral psychology and philosophy called very bad wizards, he’s had on sam Harris and Paul bloom frequently:

Great podcast checkout out and check out the subreddit r/verybadwizards

Honor takes a lot of explaining but tamlers always talking about. Or asking him u/tamler

Honestly best podcast I’ve listened to, takes shots at Making Sense with Sam Harris.

This is the first official episode of the Chameleon Philosophy Podcast. This episode of the podcast covers the intersection of evolutionary history and moral thought. I cover many different thinkers who will be linked below. This podcast also goes into the fundamental disagreements of utilitarian theory and moral pluralism on the subject of human emotions and their importants within our own ethics.
