You also might like to try Will in the World by Stephen Greenblatt. It is in fact an interesting hypothesis/biography on Shakespeare's life and time, but it reads as a novel. Greenblatt is an amazing writer, which shows in this work. Nothing academical at all, but a very fun story to read. I'd really recommend it!
Highly recommend Greenblatt's Will in the World (Greenblatt has fantastically compelling prose).
For a narrower bit of time but more precise stuff, and for a really neat book on how literary historians know what they know, I also highly recommend Charles Nicholl's The Lodger Shakespeare
