You wanna be the best fiance ever u/vickicamfield?

Get him one of these.

His neck will thank you, his hands will thank you, his precision will thank you. Probably the best purchase I've ever made for minis. You can snag em at most hobby shops.

Bonus, if he wants to do detail work I recommend a cheap set of reading glasses. He won't have to strain his eyes as much and they are a nice magnifying glass....es... you get the point lol.

PS: I recommend bright white light for better color recognition and more akin to natural light.

Edit: Also if he is thinning with water, get this. I find it works better than water and mixes with metallics!

Edit 2: For brush care, dont forget to get some brush cleaner and conditioner. Maybe a wet palette for longer paint sessions. For brushes, winsor and newton are always a solid choice.

Edit 3: Folks are asking for essentials. Here is a short list:Vallejo thinner
Masters brush conditioner
Wet palette
Kolinsky brushes
Mini holder
Liquid cement for plastics
Vallejo paints
Citadel paints
Warhammer TV
Cheap airbrush for prime/basecoat

For all of your other brushes (drybrush, layer, base, etc) use whatever, and you can usually get away with it, but for your fine detail brush(es) I strongly recommend a high quality Kolinsky sable hair brush such as the Windsor & Newton Series 7:

https://www.amazon.com/Winsor-Newton-Kolinsky-Sable-Watercolor/dp/B0013E68TO

The reason for that is because sable hair works so much better than synthetic or vinyl bristles - it takes longer to dry out, holds a fine tip better, and is just easier to work with overall.

So when you are doing eyes and teeth, use something high quality like that.

Also remember to use a wet palette to keep your paints appropriately thinned, rinse your brush as soon as you notice it drying, and once you're finished with each painting session be sure to clean your brushes using a brush cleaner:

Basically run the brush under your faucet to get it wet, then brush it onto that tub of "soap" until it is lathered up, then swirl the brush around on your palm working the soap into the bristles, then rinse it under the faucet. You may need to do this 2 or 3 times depending on how funky your brush is.

I've bought Windsor and Newton series 7 from Amazon. I've used them for three years. They're amazing.

When you buy you are buying from Amazon directly, totally safe, or from a third party through Amazon. If the latter, just pick one with good ratings. If it's fake, which I highly doubt, you can just tell Amazon. You'll get your money back and keep the brushes.

I bought these in November of 2015 and am still using them daily.

I just checked by the way, there are thirty different sellers in Amazon selling Windsor and Newton. Pick any one, order it, if dissatisfied order from a different.

If you get a medium, an acrylic medium, or what I use is airbrush medium, then you can basically make your own washes too... But I still use my devlan mud :)

I have a wide assortment of brushes, but what I use most (and I paint 15mm, which is smaller than your figures) is my Winsor & Newton series 7 size 2. It has a great tip, and can hold a lot of paint or water.

Believe me, if you enjoy painting, I'd recommend getting this brush. For me it really makes a difference. And if you take care of it, it will last forever.
