Google sent one to Project Fi customers as part of the holiday gift... and they're pretty cheap at Amazon. I ended up buying this one and it works perfectly.
There's also this Google engineer that has been buying and reviewing Type C cables specifically due to the number of bad ones on the market.

I haven't had any issues like that with my device that I've had since launch.

The only issue was the base of the cable was a little too wide to fit while my phone was in the case. So I had to dremel the edges a bit to make them fit, but I've had no other issues.
I have a 2017 Honda CR-V and also used to use a Nexus 6P with Android Auto with a USB-A to C cable. I recently switched to Pixel 2XL. Rarely had issues with the N6P. Using the same USB-A to C cable with my Pixel 2XL and initially had issues where phone would load Android Auto but car wouldn't sync. Had to remove and re-pair the bluetooth a couple times when I first switched and it eventually worked. Once in a while I have to power cycle the phone when AndroidAuto doesn't sync with the car.

Benson approved and really high quality. I don't think anything can withstand cat teeth, braided or not. Don't leave your cables out.
