It's actually a pretty fascinating story, about corruption and the absurdities of government

80-90% of the Pequot were wiped out by smallpox, and the rest were killed or enslaved and sold off to the West Indies or other tribes in 1637

For all intents and purposes, the tribe was destroyed, with about a dozen people even capable of claiming partial heritage by 1910

In 1973, the very last person claiming to have some Pequot blood died, and their land was handed over to the state

Which was when a trio of three white guys saw their opportunity

So tenuous and unsubstantiated was their claims of Native heritage that federal recognition took an act of Congress rather than the administrative process of the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) and Department of Interior (who require actual evidence instead of political noise)

There's a great book on this subject: https://www.amazon.com/Without-Reservation-Americas-Powerful-Foxwoods/dp/0060193670

The Pequots were never formally recognized and their claim was not properly traced back when this shit went down in the 70s. You want an example of people making unverified claims to their ancestry for profit. That is a good example. Did you read the article? No. I can clearly see you did not. But Hey a wayward checkbox once that was used by institutions to meet diversity requirements is clearly an example of the horrific things Warren did to the American Indians. Keep fucking that Turkey its almost soup.

EDIT: Read the reviews of this book on them... they are precious;

You should educate yourself about the Pequots before flinging insults, kid. Skip Hayward was white trash and not at all native, the non-whites in the group are mostly black but have some Narragansett blood. Genealogically speaking, they're not actually Pequots. The real Pequots were annihilated.

This is a good book on the topic, by the same guy who wrote "Little Pink House".

An interesting fellow weighed in on this story.

FTA:

>Tuesday on "CBS This Morning," Benedict, author of the book, "The Mormon Way of Doing Business" said it's amazing that these stories haven't come out. "The big question is who is he, what's behind the front. And these stories show case what Mitt Romney's really about. A guy who takes six hours off on a campaign trail to dig out someone's stump who he doesn't know and will probably never see again and gets dirty and there are no reporters there."

>Benedict, a Romney supporter, said Romney is comfortable with his story, despite what critics say about his lack of authenticity. "The thing is he just doesn't tell that story very often," Benedict said. "These incidents are really good portals into what this guy is about when he's not in front of a camera. I think you learn a lot about a man when you say, 'what is he's doing when no one's looking, when he doesn't have to do anything. What does he do with his time? What this guy is usually doing is serving other people. He's been doing that long before he was a candidate."
