I'm fascinated by indecent exposure laws in the United States, in no small part because of the huge gap between what we think they are, and what they actually are. So many of us think the laws have all been written by puritans who hate sex and hate anything "fun" that we intuitively think the United States as this bastion of repression.
Well, there are certainly repressed people here--but often the actual law is not what we think it is.
I remember moving to North Carolina and asking someone who grew up here what he thought the law was. (You know, random conversations over beer; sometimes weird shit comes up.) He told me in no uncertain terms that anything--toplessness, exposing the rear end, nudity--is highly illegal and expect to do hard time in jail even if you don't expose anything. Because Bible Belt or something like that.
Nope. The actual law in North Carolina would permit a woman to walk around downtown Raleigh dressed only in this. No, that's not an eye patch. (In practice if a woman were to do this, I suspect the police would ask her to go away because of disturbing the peace, not indecent exposure.)
