The current Wonder Woman series is totally new reader friendly. While it's not technically an origin story, it doesn't require any knowledge of Wonder Woman prior to the beginning of this series. It also functions very well in continuity with everything since the 80s reboot, which is one thing I really enjoy about it.

If you want actual origin stories, Gods and Mortals is a good one (it is still available for order from most comic stores, so check your LCS for better prices; they are overcharging a bit on that link). That is Wonder Woman's origin post-Crisis on Infinite Earths. It's a very good and very enjoyable story. However, a lot of modern comic readers have trouble with anything older than the late-90s, so you may not want to start her there.

Since she liked Batwoman, she may be really interested in Greg Rucka's run on Wonder Woman (volume 02, issues 195-226), which is collected in trades. In order:

  • Down to Earth (issues 195-200)
  • Bitter Rivals (issue 201-205)
  • Eyes of the Gorgon (issues 206-213)
  • Land of the Dead (issues 214-217, and Flash 219)
  • Mission's End (issues 218-226)

Rucka's run is incredibly enjoyable, filled with many badass moments. While it helps to have a little knowledge of Wonder Woman going in, this run doesn't rely heavily on the assumption that people are familiar with the character.

I would second the suggestion for most of Gail Simone's run. There are a ton of great stories there. However, I do feel that there is a lot that may go over a new reader's head. Once she decides to delve more into Wonder Woman, Gail's run is terrific.

Also, whatever you do, avoid the clusterf**k known as Odyssey. It was supposed to be a new, modern origin for Wonder Woman. What it ended up being was a nonsensical tale of absolutely nothing happening, Diana being a whiny bitch (totally uncharacteristic), and then a final issue that goes "Haha, none of it happened." This is coming from a life-long, die-hard Wonder Woman fan. Avoid that story.

If she finds she wants to read more of Wonder Woman, that's awesome. However, there aren't a lot of Wonder Woman trades out there. Less than half of volume 02 is collected, volume 03 is totally collected minus three issues, and volume 04 is what's running at the moment. If she wants to go back to Wonder Woman's roots, try Wonder Woman Chronicles Vol 01, which features her original origin and her earliest stories from the 1940s, and the follow-up trade, Wonder Woman Chronicles Vol 02. Both are very affordable.
