>we notice the lower end more because dealing with someone dumber than you is more offensive than dealing with someone smarter, so you remember it longer.
As someone of above average intelligence who spends a lot of time therefore dealing with people of less intelligence, I can tell you that people take it better every time if they think you are dumber than them. Being smarter than them means that they were wrong about something and most people hate hearing that.
>among all the people I have met in my life, income is correlated extremely strongly with intelligence
According to studies, it's actually directly tied to emotional intelligence, the ability to read people and use their emotions. See: Working with Emotional Intelligence
>My mum is a pretty competent driver, but she couldn't even tell you how the fucking gears on a bicycle work, or what a clutch looks like.
I think the computer is a much better reference point, because knowledge about the inner workings of a computer and a network have a direct relationship to your ability to use those tools to your advantage. Most people that use computers nowadays think they are magic and this shows any time they try to do anything themself. And when that fails, it's the fault of the software/hardware and not the user. And because of this, we end up with dumber and dumber software and UIs as we have to pander to a lower and lower common denominator.
