This is the puzzle that made my grandfather ban my parents from buying him puzzles.

That would be a tricky one, but it could be done. It doesn't appear to be double-cut, meaning that you can tell which side of each piece is top. I've done double sided puzzles Where you can't tell what side of a piece goes up.

With this one, start with the middle piece and work outwards along the spiral. Just keep trying curved pieces at random until one fits. Once you're done that the corners and edges seem to be fairly easy. Filling in the spaces between the spiral and the edges will be the toughest part.

Is this a real puzzle for sale somewhere? I think I might like to try it.

Not an avid puzzle doer so I can't, sorry. The one I mentioned was with a past girlfriend many years ago and it took us a few weeks to solve it, doing a little each day.

If I remember correctly it was named "world's hardest jigsaw puzzle" so I imagine some similar search terms would yield some results.

A quick google search showed me this: http://www.amazon.com/Worlds-Most-Difficult-Jigsaw-Puzzle/dp/B00000K0FI

It's the same idea, but mine was a different graphic.

And now that I see the description I realized it should have been "rotated 90 degrees" not 45.

I don't have the post, but I think I saw the same one as you and I think this was the puzzle, because I remember the centre kind of turned into a circle.

I've also heard this one is goddamn terrible, so it might be up her alley.

When I was a kid my parents got me a double sided puzzle. Same image on both sides, but one side was rotated 90 degrees. I think it was only like 500 pieces. I worked on it an hour or two every day for a month. At the end I had 7 pairs of pieces joined. I ended up using it for kindling for a campfire. That thing was god damned infuriating.

Edit: Like this puzzle: http://www.amazon.com/Worlds-Most-Difficult-Jigsaw-Puzzle/dp/B00000K0FI but mine had a different picture. I think it was a nature scene or something. These dalmations look insanely harder.

Look at the Ravensburger Krypt ones if you like the look of that.

Also, Buffalo do some printed front and back, one rotated 90 degrees. This one looks very hard indeed: https://www.amazon.com/Worlds-Most-Difficult-Jigsaw-Puzzle/dp/B00000K0FI

Another one in this range

Do you have a link? I've only found the 500 piece version, which is hard enough.

For an easier time you could have a go at my favorite jigsaw. It's a double-sided puzzle where one side is a picture of a bunch of dalmatians, and the other side is the same photo rotated 90 degrees.

No, actually not. Sorry, mate. I haven't tried it neither. But this would be such a great present. My SO is vicious with puzzles. Even this dozens of Dalmatians puzzle with the same background she did in almost no time. link... It's frustrating to challenge her without reverting to this one... behold....

Are you a puzzle expert by any chance and have other difficult recommendations?

Easier than this one

  • Feature the same artwork on the back as on the front - turned 90 degrees
  • Die-cut to make the front and back indistinguishable
