The drive requires a special enclosure that you can purchase as well. You CAN use any small (as in laptop sized) hard drive, you just need to flash it using the appropriate software (google it) so the xbox will recognize it. However, I believe you run the risk of getting banned. I'd just get one of the microsoft specific ones off of amazon.

I bought a Microsoft 250G internal hard drive for my 360 S a few years ago. I wanted an internal hard drive so that I could copy games onto the hard drive. You still have to have the disc, but I bought it to save wear on the optical drive and hopefully improve load times.
I bought a Microsoft branded drive instead of a generic after market internal drive because at the time, the Microsoft brand came with whatever was needed for backwards compatibility with Xbox Classic games. I have no idea if this is still the case, but at the time, the branded drive came with an emulator or whatever that the third party drives didn't have.

also I stand corrected, two sizes. although the 250gb one I guess is no longer in production.
these are the only official hard drive that is made and sold. anything outside of that is 3rd party and should be used at your own risk.

Worst part about this? That's not even the Microsoft brand drive.

Insane!

I say this a lot, but get the 4GB Kinect bundle. then pick up the official MS 250GB Slim hard drive for less than $100. it is $90 on amazon right now, for example.

or get an unofficial one for around $60.

sure, the 4GB is matte, not glossy, and does not come with a headset, but instead you get an additional 4GB of internal storage, which you don't get with the 250GB, nor can it ever be added. you can add a headset, probably for $10 or less.

Is it the xbox360 slim or xbox360 phat?

That matters because of the HD to buy

This one for the slim

Buy this.

Don't buy a HD from EB Games/Gamestop you will end up paying full retail price.

An official MS 250GB goes for $79.99 on Amazon.com I'm sure they have smaller if you don't need that much space or grab a USB flash drive. I do believe Xbox supports up to 32GB.

Edit: Here is a link for a generic 60GB for $40, check out the reviews.

If cost isn't the issue, I'd get a new one. You never know what's been done to a second-hand 360.

Do you think you'll play a lot of downloadable games? If so, I'd say spring for the 250GB model (or the Kinect bundle if that's your thing).

If you don't think you'll be buying/playing a lot of downloadable games, I'd do as other posters have recommended and use USB drives for the additional up-to-16GB-at-a-time (here's some info on that). Even then, if you find yourself wanting a bigger hard drive in the future, buy a bigger drive at that point.

Good luck! There are a ton of great downloadable games on XBLA these days: Monday Night Combat, Limbo, Super Meat Boy, Beyond Good & Evil HD, Torchlight, BRAID, Shadow Complex... the list goes on, and that doesn't even include upcoming stuff like Bastion, Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet, Outland, Fez, etc.

I find myself playing almost exclusively XBLA games, partly because of the time I have to dedicate to gaming, and partly because of the variety and innovation being pushed in the downloadable space.

My apologies, apparently Microsoft broke compatibility with old harddrives according to Wikipedia. I wasn't aware of this or that they would even pull something like this. (shame on you, Microsoft!)

>The external hard disk drive connector has also been swapped for an internal bay for use with a proprietary hard drive; this is neither a standard drive nor compatible with older models.

I have found this instead, though.

I'm talking about this or this. I don't have experience with generic brands, but they probably work well and come in smaller sizes than the official Xbox versions. They're pricey though, so maybe gauge your need first.

u/Merlaak · 1 pointr/GameDeals

It's this one. Also, I was slightly incorrect. It's 250 gb, not 200.

For your first question, I'm sure it'll be fine.

You can, and it's best that you put your saves on a flashdrive. But games that require a hard drive NEED a hard drive, like Titanfall and I think GTA V.

Xbox Live Gold goes on sale for like $40 every week (for the 12 month). If you have Twitter, follow @MajorNelson, he always tweets deals.

If you want to get a hard drive later (get it as soon as you can), it is EASY to install. There is a panel on the side of the Xbox. You just take it off, put the Hard Drive in, put the panel back on......that's it. This is the hard drive you will need.

I suggest getting the more expensive one that comes with an HDD. With an HDD, you can install games onto it, so the disc wont be spinning while you're playing, and the Xbox will run quieter.

I think the point of my post went right over your head.

I was simply giving proof of the outrageous cost (MSRP) behind the 360 hard drive (which, coincidentally, hasn't changed).

Even a child would know how 3rd party sellers work on Amazon, don't worry. :-)

The 250 GB Xbox 360 Slim hard drive has an MSRP (set my Microsoft) of $130.

This is while I can have a standard 500GB hard drive for less than $40 (or around $50 for the more premium brands).

Furthermore, Microsoft has just announced a new 500GB hard drive, retail price is $110. The fact that this LARGER hard drive has a LOWER price than previous ones shows that MS is simply charging whatever they want.

Basically, proprietary /non-standard accessories SUCK. So once again, FUCK MICROSOFT.
