It is a little counter-intuitive at first to not have the game be the forefront of the gaming console dashboard, but I understand why the design team placed it the way they did.

Microsoft has been trying to pitch the Xbox as an all-around entertainment device, rather than just a gaming console for eons. Back when the original black box played DVD movies, that was cutting edge for its time. Now with all of the video and music apps and things (not to mention Kinect where you don't even have to use a controller) the 360 has developed into a full-fledged one box media center. Stick that thing in your entertainment system under your tv and grab yourself one of those sweet remotes and you don't even need games.

HBOGo. Netflix. Hulu. ESPN. Last.fm. YouTube. Facebook... need I go on?

To make the "play game" button the main focus would be going against their whole strategy. The Xbox becomes just another gaming console.

I've been using the Xbox 360 Universal Media Remote (backlit version) along with the Microsoft IR receiver and it has never failed me. I do remember having to tweak a registry setting to get it to work without installing any other software. Other than that though, it's a perfect HTPC remote for me.

edit:added registry tweak link

Yes the game controller does, but if you get the DVD controller it uses IR and must have line of sight. Why I ask, WHY?

I've got both and, honestly, I really prefer the Xbox for most things for several reasons.

  1. The XBOX media center remote is much more user friendly and comfortable in my hand than the PS3 dvd remote. Since I do a lot of streaming/moving watching this is a big deal for me.

  2. The Xbox interface is much easier to navigate.

  3. The Xbox marketplace is much easier to use than the PSN store.

  4. Installs and updates take much less time on the Xbox and happen much less often. It seems that everytime I power up my pS3 I can expect 5-15 minutes worth of crap to update.

  5. Kinect is way more useful than move. There are several excellent Kinect games plus I use the connect video chat feature on a regular basis to talk to friends.

Things I prefer about the PS3:
umm....other than the rare exclusive I'm interested in, nothing really off the top of my head.
    EDIT:
Oh, my kids prefer the PS3 controller. I personally like them both equally well.

if you don't have one of these, you should consider it.. is a programmable tv/home theater remote too.

FYI - This remote kind of sucks compared to the original 360 Media Remote. The old one had a dedicated Media Center button and actually had light-up buttons which really came in handy when in a dark room. My old remote is worn out since I use the 360 for all TV and movie watching, so I held out a bit because this new one looked like it might be good. Only good thing about it is that it is sleeker and the buttons are "clicky" with very short travel.

In short, I'd suggest trying to find the old remote at a Gamestop or something since you'll probably be able to get them cheap now. I haven't used any 3rd-party remotes so unfortunately I'm unable to compare in that regard.

Solution: buy an X-Box remote.
