If you're not used to walking in slippery conditions, add a pair of YakTrax to your kit. They're under $20. Carry a Ziploc or other waterproof bag for when you're not using them--you'll need to slip them off the instant to get inside because they're damaging to floors.

Slip on cleats like these have worked really well for me through the years. Really gives me confidence when walking on ice.
I'm wearing my YakTrax for the first time today. I know ice fishermen wore them when I lived in Wisconsin. I don't feel unstable, but I guess I'll really find out how good they work when I'm dodging cars riding up onto the sidewalk.
YakTrax. They are legit awesome.

I feel like I always slip on ice every year because we get thawing and freezing periods through the winter. I invested in a pair of Yak Trax and they have been fairly helpful and easy to put on/off when I need to go out and shovel snow.
Probably going to get myself some yaktrax for when it gets icy! Cheaper than adding a lugged sole: https://www.amazon.com/Yaktrax-Traction-Cleats-Walking-Small/dp/B0094GO9DA/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1504653022&sr=8-2&keywords=crampon&th=1
I don't have a treadmill for my dog, but I do recommend yaktrax for winter walks! I run with my dog and have no hesitations running on patches of ice with these things on.
These are great for icy sidewalks

Is it looking like microspike weather? They're so damn heavy, but they are damn useful.
Edit: For those interested: I found a very lightweight set called Yaktrax. I'm going to bring them along, and if they suck I'll toss them in a hiker box. They're only 1.6 oz, so not too bad.
Repeated falls suck, while waiting for the property owner to do the right thing buy yourself some yaktrax or some of the cheaper copies. It's Wisconsin, you'll use them enough to justify the cost.
I wear some DC sneakers most of the time, slip on boots for crappy weather. If its icy and a bit of a walk i have some slip ice cleat things.

I used those for a few years, I'm currently using the run version.
Get some Yaktrax. They get destroyed pretty fast, especially if you're on the big and/or heavy side, but they work great for everything but a solid sheet of ice. They have increasingly more ridiculous and expensive models depending on your use case.
I went through three sets when I commuted on foot.
